I have been looking at some rolled 2nd gen Tacoma's. Well I found one close on copart that has been rolled but still runs and drives. Just about every body panel including the cab needs replaced. So I thought, if its possible, to find a cheap base 2wd 4cy truck that doesn't runs and swap everything over including the cab. I know, it will be a job for sure but I'm willing to do it.

So, is it possible, the body and mount points on the frame look the same on diagrams. Are the inner fender and radiator supports the same? I figured they will be different mounts for stuff in the engine bay because of the two different engines, but that shouldn't be that big of a problem, they can be made.

    Thanks

the bodies/cabs are the same for each style, same with the beds. the 4wd fenders have the flares (base 2wds don't have flares). The frames themselves might be different due to mounting points for suspension, transmission, and differential (fronts).

Engine mounts would be the same for 2.7s or 4.0s

OK so you think maybe the cab and bed might mount differently on a 4wd frame? All I can find is a frame diagram for the 2.7 and 4.0 and mounts are the same.

maybe I didn't clarify it well.

the body styles are the same for 4wd and 2wd (AC is AC, DC is DC, Reg is Reg), since they are stamped identical from the factory. The only difference being the 4wd comes with the additional fender flares and may have holes for them to mount (1st Gen does so 4wd bed had holes cut into them at factory)

the frames might be different as the 4wd have front differentials and beefier components

OK but the 2wd body panels and maybe radiator support and inner fenders will be the only thing swaped onto the 4wd drive frame. So there really shouldn't be any problems, maybe the inner fenders are different because of the slightly different frame plus the front diff. And I realize the 2wd have no flares, but I don't care.

I think if there is a problem, it would be an easy fix.

So does anyone know if the radiator support and inner fenders on the 2wd 2.7 are the same as the 4wd 4.0?

You should probably be fine if you're just switching body panels. As far as i know, Toyota has been pretty good about building their trucks with everything as close to the same as possible. You should be able to put 2WD body stuff onto a 4x4 no problem. If you're looking at a full cab swap you might run into issues with the 4WD components and dash pieces lining up. ( Or just cut some holes and call it a day)

Ya I've done that and you can't even pick 2wd as an option? They just show you parts for 2.7l engine models and 4.0 models.

Ya I figure there might be a few little things but for the most part I think it should work.

    Thanks everyone.
