    Brown sugar water and mayonnaise sandwich since long before Trick Daddy was born. :D

    Also boiled/fried cabbage. Steam it soft, then brown it in butter or bacon fat.

    Also easy on folks with bad/no teeth. :eek::(

    PA Dutch here, hard times would see some flour and water, maybe some onion or turnip, cooked in a little milk, water, and butter. Maybe a wee bit of smoked sausage Grandma chopped finer than cocaine so everybody gets a taste.
    "Hunger makes the best seasoning."

    One of my uncle's told me when it was really hard, sometimes Gram would put a pot of water on the stove, add some salt and say/pray;
    "He who gave us teeth shall provide us food."

    My go to in college was chicken and rice. I would buy the biggest cheapest bag of rice I could find. Whatever chicken was the cheapest/best value. Then use soy sauce, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire, hot sauce and/or any spice mixes I could come up with. Rice for filler, chicken for taste... Cooked every 2-3 days, made extra so I could just reheat it.

    Still can't pass up a nice PB&J though

    I have never eaten tilapia, but have read a few articles on it and its the last fish on earth I would ever eat.

    My go-to 'cheap meal' is rice & bean burritos. I buy the rice in bulk, 20lbs at a time (jasmine, because I like the flavor) for $20 at the local health food store. I buy the beans the same way, 20lbs each of Black and Red Kidneys dried for about the same price. The upfront cost is high, but I use 1 cup of rice and 1/2 cup of each of the beans per meal, so they last a long-ass time (I get probably 50 batches from the rice and close to 80 batches from the beans)

    I haven't worked out the exact cost per meal, but it's less than $2 per batch all in, including spices, wraps, hot sauce, and usually I'll throw in some frozen corn too. And each batch feeds me and the GF for dinner with enough left over for lunch the next day too. :notsure:

    While drunken camping years ago, we came up with bean delight. Baked beans with sliced hotdogs, small pineapple chunks, some juice from the pineapple can, topped with American cheese simmered in a pot. Sounds gross but despite some flatulence, everybody liked it.

    My favorite Cheap Beer.

    When it comes to spirits, I do enjoy Sobieski Premium Vodka. It's so premium it comes in a plastic bottle. It's good though.

    Regardless of what you read, I wouldn't eat tilapia because it's so dang bland.
