so this NEVER happens at the dealership? they dont believe you?

i'd leave it with them, let them deliver parts with it..or take patrons to the bus station..whatever.

Would you humor me and check the battery connections and the ground from the battery to the body? undo that bolt, make sure there's no rust or bubbling paint- take some sandpaper and make sure there's good contact, and spray dielectric grease or connection spray into the bolt hole and make sure the bolt is clean as well. Free and easy thing to check. With Hyundais we used to have starting and battery issues due to this ALL THE TIME. Like I said- 5 minutes and free.

I guess the issue I have is not knowing if there's a fuel delivery issue or an electrical issue- kind've hard from this end of the interwebz.

Could it be just a very little bit out of timing? Or maybe a cat clogging but no O2 issues so no CEL on? PCV clogged? Throttle body position sensor?

Yeah, they have had it for 3+ weeks and it has "never" happened to them. They do believe me but I have a hard time believing them.

As for the battery, I have checked that and changed batteries and still no change.

    Unlikely.

That scenario would be a full time problematic event, especially during throttle positions supplying 3+ GPH. At idle, the V6 burns only 0.4 GPH.

Before starting the truck. Turn the key to the on position, wait 5 seconds, the turn to crank. If it always starts without dying then its fuel related.

Another thing. If i start my truck after my battery is removed it will die after the first attempt.
So, could be that your truck is losing power while not in use. Check for any loose fuses or wires.

My thinking was not for loss of pressure or Flow.

Well the issue happened this morning. Started on the 4th try. I was able to get a video and sent it to my contact at the dealer. He forwarded it on to their field tech and this was his response:

"Not exactly sure but it doesn't seem to be fuel pressure related due to the fact that it dies so smooth without sputtering. I would hook up a fuel pressure gauge anyway to be sure. Maybe a Mass Air Flow related issue. I could inspect it but if it doesn't duplicate it, then it will be difficult."

The field tech is out next week but wants to look at it as soon as he is back.

I have attached a video to show the issue:

Glad you got it on tape. I do hope the Dealer /field tech can fix it. Sure does seem strange.

It is very smooth when it cuts off, it is a mystery. Thinking a faulty sensor or electrical component.

Again, doesn't look like a fuel issue. Seems like a idle speed or maf-related problem. I cant believe that a "good" svc dept couldn't get the truck to "fail" at least once in their possession, or just double-check all the cold-start electronics. Does it only do it on "cold-starts"?

Not just cold starts. Normally that's where it happens but has happened while out and about.

I was contacted by Toyota Experience Center this morning. I send in a complaint regarding the ongoing issue. They were nice, apologized and said they would assign a Case Manager to my issue to that they could be in contact with myself and the dealer to make sure that this issue gets taken care of. Hoping that things are looking up. More to come...

oil pressure sending unit. If it is faulty it will kill the fuel pump. which is why if you get the revs up it will run just fine. The sending unit will kill the pump at low oil pressure if you're wondering.

I was considering giving them the transcript for this thread as potential ideas to investigate. Maybe they would be open to reading it or maybe they wouldn't but the more information available and more brains working on the issue the better IMO.

This is promising as well and easy to swap the sender out.

IMO I do feel this issue is fuel starvation related and not loss of spark.

OP - Does this happen / ONLY do this when the vehicle has been sitting for hours - or has it done it when you run into a store and try to start again after only a short time ???? (Engine temps affect oil pressure and fuel inputs)

Happens more often when it has been sitting (overnight or during work) but has happened while out and about although it is less often.

Forget about MAF sensors. I dont see either why you would have a fuel pressure problem at iddle and not at WOT.

I will be curious to see your AFR in open loop mode at cold start. It looks like your going way too rich and it stalls.
