Hairline crack top left of radiator

Anyone know if the top plastic peice is replaceable or be better off buying a whole new radiator. I'm as we speak running some radiator heavy duty stop leak in it to see if that seals it up. It's only leaking about 1/4 of a ounce at idle in the past 5 minutes. But eairler before I had the stop leak in it, it would leak about a oz a minute under 50% throttle. Noticed after hauling a bunch of gear camping.
What's your guys opinions?

 

Just get a new rad. I went thru 4 rads on my last Tacoma. Everything from failure just like yours to wild turkeys in the grill/rad. I bet I can change a rad in 5 minutes. Faster if you got a stick shift.

I just bought mine off Ebay. Every one was a perfect fit and all around $100

 

Modern radiators aren't repairable to the best of my knowlege.

Do yourself a favor and dont put anymore stop leak in it.
Stuff is bad for your cooling system..
Depending on where its cracked, I have seen them fixed with epoxy like jb weld.

 

A good rad shop can replace that upper tank(and lower) utilizing the aluminum tab clamp that holds it to the radiator core. You get 1 shot at a reuse of that original clamp,,then the next time around for a radiator or radiator work like that the whole thing gets replaced(usually).

Have had several radiators fixed like that at our local shop. About $25 in parts and labor is what I paid each time. 1 radiator has about 250K on it again after the flush and tank replace.

Sometimes you have to ask for it to be done, otherwise they will just gladly sell you a new one.

Johnson Manuf makes those tools to decrimp and recrimp those clamp tabs yourself,,but they are specialty spendy.

 

strange? I have seen lots of plastic parts fixed permanently and solidly with fiberglass. I suppose radoators are different because of the temperature extremes but I might give the fiberglass patch a try before replacing it, I mean you have nothing to lose by trying it right?

holy crap dude, are you like doing 60 mph through the woods or something? I cant imagine getting a turkey through the radiator, maybe deer but turkeys? lol

I think I paid $60 for my replacement rad. For that money it wasnt worth my effort to try and repair the old one.

 

fiberglass takes 5 minutes and only costs $5 and you don't even need to remove it from the truck

 

My effort in fiberglassing is worth more than $60. I dont have patience for patches since my patchwork will almost certainly fail. haha

 

I bought a radiator from ebay myself and it didnt fit even though it said it would. Even checked the measurements. Wrong inventory or listing, idk but I bought one from O'Reilly. Think it has a warranty too, can't remember. But I was in a hurry and couldnt wait for another one on order. No one had one in stock, but O'reilly had one transferred to their store in a couple hours.

As far as repairing the crack, not worth it. It will eventually leak again. The constant expanding and contracting will break that repair loose over time. I tried that water weld on mine and it lasted about a week before it started leaking again. It works great as a temp fix until you get one ordered if you do though. As far as fiberglass goes, I think I read somewhere, at the time mine went out, that someone tried that and it not only looked like shit, but failed again as well. Same with epoxy. Just not worth the time and effort imo.

Get a new one. I would actually try ebay. Even though I got the wrong one, you may have better luck. Just make sure to take measurements. I would even go as far as contacting the seller and asking them to measure it themselves to double check. If they go that far then it'd def be worth it.

$66 bucks. 302 of them sold! Just make damn sure you check your measurements and compare with their listing. its for 2wd's only. Theres 4x4's too. Check check check and quadruple check your measurements!

true, jb can do some amazing things.
But again, for me I would rather put in a new rad for $60 and not worry about it failing while I'm in the middle of nowhere. We aren't talking hundreds of dollars for a complete 100% fit to the problem.

 

Yup, went down the fiberglass road, and 2 part epoxy, fast and slow, marine grade,,rough prep,,light prep,,super clean, yada yada,,no dice with those plastic tanks. To much temp swing and age.

Tank replace or all in,,your choice of one.

 

I just went to Napa and picked up a replacement radiator, hoses and fluid. Should last another 100k miles lmao
