OK , Just picked up a 02 4dr v6 4wd TRD SR5 auto from a hard roll over . Trans was rebuilt about 150k and currently on 202k . Even on P to R or R to D it goes in a bit hard for my liking BUT when shifting into 2nd it delays for a bit then hits rather hard , the rest of the up shifts are ok as are the down shifts .
It had a hole in the pan from the roll over so i dropped it and welded it but saw no real debris or burnt fluid . I Did not change the filter at that time .
Turning on the ect pwr seems to make it worse . We have the latest in snap on scan tool and software but its showing nothing . So that leaves me to think its either mechanical or just the way it is .
I will be doing a cab swap in a few weeks but for now I just drive it back n forth to work , no towing and its off road days are over , time to retire from the rocks and mud .

ummm, I have to ask, it looks like it was under water so why did you even want it?

I don't see anything worth salvaging there ?

as to the question, got any pictures of the hole? was there any sign whatever punctured it hit anything inside or water got in it?

I would have concerns there is rust in it or maybe it was left to run dry on fluid during the rollover with the engine still running and whatever happened after and during that time.

I would remove the filter first and see if its full of trash, hopefully that might be all it is but if the filter isn't blocked with trash it could be in the shifter mechanism.

Never underwater , it rolled while wheeling so it never got cleaned . The front drive shaft kissed the pan or the grease fitting did anyway when it rolled due to a bad trans mount so it was never driven after that . Cottman rebuilt it and supposedly it was bit firm right after but they said it was normal . Again , all of this info is second hand and again there were no debris or water in the pan and the fluid was , dark but no where near burnt .
I know some trans like their own flavor of fluid and as with any vehicle , each has its own quirks and fixes , I was just curious if there were any particular ones related to this such as a re-flash or mod , wrong fluid ect ect
Gave 1k for the truck which could easily be re-couped in parts and I have got a cab for just under 500.00 .
No frame damage or any other major issues . I have put about 1000 miles on it so far with no problems . It did have 285/75/16s on it which was not helping out with gas or trans so I went down to 245/70s .

I should mention we own a big towing and tire shop so I have no problems fixing these totaled cars & trucks if the initial price is right .

Here is the hole , I pulled the pan , cleaned it , tapped it back out and welded it up nice from the inside .

cab swap should not be too bad since the one I found is the exact same trim / option package so no wiring swap should be needed .

ok well now it makes more sense especially since that's not rust but mud im seeing in the pictures. at first I thought it was solid rust everywhere lol.

I bet something happened to the electrical shifting mechanism or the wires feeding it. the fact that it shifts hard "should" mean the clutches are good if they grab hard.
