Hey all, I've seen a few of these trucks in my area priced way above kbb, so I'm wondering if demand is so high for these that sellers can get a higher price.
I've seen a few that are in the 120,000 - to 150,000 selling for around 10,000 to 11,000 private party. Both trucks are 2000, 2001, with V6, and auto tranny. They have some mods, but its my understanding that these don't add much value to the truck. I'm in Colorado.

    Thanks!

blue book the one you want and go from there. Not sure why they're being offered at a higher price than kbb. maybe they are hoping to negotiate down to actual kbb price?

As far as why they retain their price, the 1st gen trucks were fairly solid-built trucks and are pretty known for reliability. it's not uncommon to see these with such high mileage and the lower mileage ones for sale going for a higher price.

These trucks bring good money, double cabs are really crazy, one reason is they only made them from 01-04. Extra cab first generation tacoma, well you can buy them from 95-04, some people think because they have one, they will get a premium price for it. If you study 1st gens for sale on this forum you will see where people got their feelings hurt when they went to sell. One simple rule when I buy is this, I will pay the premium price, but you got to have the premium truck. I want to purchase one that looks like new everywhere but the odometer for the premium price, anything less gonna be bought for less. I see many people trying to get premium price for average condition trucks, those are the ones that get their feelings hurt. Many may not agree with me but that is fine, this philosophy has worked well as I have flipped several tacomas over the years.

KBB is a good starting point, but it's all about supply and demand. Toyota trucks hold their value, plus if there aren't many to be found locally the seller has better negotiating power. I had a 93 Toyota pickup SR5 4wd with about 155,000 miles a few years back. I sold it for around $6000.

Come to California and add about 30% over KBB for a clean west coast no rust truck. The ones that sit on the lot here are the ones that are trucked in from the East. The west coast trucks dont last and bring a heavy premium

Can't remember what kbb was when I bought my truck. But I bought it in May 2014. 2003 DC v6 4x4 (Non TRD) with about 135k for $11,500. I thought I got a pretty good deal for it. Like offrdmania mentioned, these trucks cost a lot in SoCal.

My 2002 Prerunner X-tra cab 3.4L Auto 2WD has less than 55,000 original miles on it, is in perfect running order. Silver color. Central California truck, never seen the snow, never been off roads. Totally stock except an added Snug-Top Camper shell with Thule rack. I purchased the truck from the first owner (an 86 years old lady) just 2 years ago. I realize i don't use the truck, have just driven it 2000 miles since i own it.
If i were to sell it, what would be a fair price?

My truck has its share of dings, scratches, and light surface rust on the frame. 04 prerunner dc v6 auto w/166k i had one dealership in sac offer me 10 grand last year. I was in the market to sell it and pick up a low mileage is300. Just couldn't find a stick version. Now i can't bring myself to part with her...

from what I see the average asking price is $2k above book value and some get that (because some people don't mind overpaying to get one of these trucks) but I think most get about $1k over book value after negotiating if the truck is in very excellent condition inside and out with low miles.

if the truck is in "good" shape (few dents, minor paint or rust issues) with low miles or even if it is in great shape with high miles, then I wouldn't pay more then actual book value. if its in "good" shape with high miles I would offer les then book and try to buy it at least $1k under book.

From what I've seen here in CA they sell for over KBB, At least if you want a decent one...Took me a while to find mine and almost all the ones that had what I was looking for (had to have the V6, 4WD & manual trans) were well over KBB, I got lucky with mine, 2000 TRD 4x4 Supercharged 3.4 5-speed with 80k miles (all stock other than the S/C & Supra seats. was asking $11.5k got it for $10k in December 2012. Now if you want just a basic 2wd one its MUCH easier to find for quite a bit less $

Considering you are in Colorado it seems look for trucks in Nebraska. I've found several for far cheaper than that with the same miles.

These trucks hold their value for obvious reasons. The double cabs seems to be more expensive, along with the TRD models.

I bought my double cab used with 220,000 km's (130,000 mi) for around 11k, really clean truck. In Canada btw.

Thought I got a pretty good deal though.

When I bought mine for $11,500 it was actually right around KBB. Came with a Warn Trans4mer and Camper. which I ended up removing and selling.

I got my 04 DC for 11k with 150k miles. Mine came with a color matched topper and brand new AT tires and was in really clean condition. I considered it a good deal for a Cali taco. Id still pay that today for it.
