Do I really need to install this system on my truck? Is the hype really worth it?

Funny story. Was in my drive cleaning my previous Tacoma. Some guy drives up in a 4 door, 1st gen Tacoma. He asks me if I'm interested in a stainless, TRD exhaust. He wrecked his previous x-cab, got the 4 door with insurance money and intended to install his barely used TRD exhaust on the new Tacoma. He later found out that 4 doors trucks and x-cab trucks have different exhaust. He was upset to find out they didn't fit.

He told me he drove by my place several times a week, seeing I had an x-cab Tacoma. Took a risk and asked me if I wanted it. I said sure. I figured I would need an exhaust sometime, I didn't.

So...to make a long story short, do I want to install this on my newer 1st gen? Or do I just want to sell it? I dunno? What gains in sound, performance, cool factor will I potentially see?20150404_123848_df9ffb0cbef133352f93411002e0a57762ce222f.jpg 20150404_123841_0e09bb5fa348358caffa2273631d588985df2af4.jpg

Here is a pic of it in its dust covered glory. Its been sitting in the corner of my shop for 2 years.

Install it if you want! If you got it for free then that would be sweet.

    Run it and see.

Would be nice to be able to do some chassis dyno pulls,,versus butt dyno.

If TRD is stamping there name on it and charging both arms and legs for it, it better do something, good or bad, lol.

If its stainless, run it. GOOD stainless doesn't rust. Ask me how i know! Im assuming the entire system is stainless, not just the tip. Even if it doesn't change your power/sound its worth having cause it "should" never rust. That's a win win in my mind.

One would hope the entire thing is good stainless. It damn should be.

TRD is not what it once was, back in the day. Now you have to sift thru the rubble. Can't afford not to.

FYI. The exhaust in that picture is NOT a TRD catback exhaust. It looks like a knock off Ebay TRD tip.

Depends on the year. I know for a fact that TRD Exhaust part number 00602-17400-023 will fit 2001-2004 Extra Cab AND Double Cab 4X4's and Pre-Runners and only have the 3.4l V6 engine.

TRD Exhaust part number 00602-17400-004 Will only fit 1995.5-1999 Extra Cab 4WD Tacomas ONLY with the 3.4l V6.

TRD Exhaust part number 00602-17400-022 Will only fit 2wd Tacoma from 2001-2004 with a 3.4l V6. This system might also fit some 2000's.

I'll have to take your words for it, how would I know? I hope $50 wasn't a rip off.

Would there be any part numbers on the thing? I'll take a magnet to it and see if it sticks at all.

OMG!!! :D install that ASAP , for a first gen, a factory performance TRD catback exhaust is a rare piece if i do say so myself. and i personally love the TRD catback that's on my second gen, plus, this exhaust is already worn in so it'll have its proper tone directly upon install, no breaking in. plus, its stainless, it'll probably outlast the life of the truck lol

to me.. this is looking to be genuine .... i say this because A.) the shape of the muffler looks like a performance muffler with a straight-through design, B.) there is no resonator on this exhaust, C.) and the exhaust tip, and the pipe inside of it are oval in shape and seem to fit together pretty flawlessly, all touches that you would not ordinarily see on a stock setup

Here is an Image of the exhaust when it was being sold new, i know its not the best picture in the world, but it was very difficult to find, and if you look closely, the similarities between this one and the other one pictured above look rather striking, again.. im pretty sure OP received a genuine product .... but... looking even deeper, i dont see the remainder of the intermediate pipe with the OP's setup. hm.. odd.

How long does an exhaust take to "break in"?

The intermediate pipe section is just not in the pic. I only a small amount of time before heading to work. I got it, just no pic.

It honestly depends on the brand, most of the time with other aftermarket brands it takes about 2 months maybe, but with my TRD exhaust on my second gen, made by bosal, I feel it took at least a year, maybe more to fully break in, because it sounds worlds better now then when it did when I got the truck, and the exhaust has been on there the entire time ive had the truck, which is just going on 3 years :)

Oh alright, thats very good, that probably would've been a slight pain to fit to your truck if you didn't have it, or had to get something custom made
