Finally Color Matched my Grille

I used Noe's writeup (PreRunner05) which was great and helpful. I sanded the entire thing down, taped it up (I suggest taping the vents despite its tedious nature) and began painting. I ordered my paint from Automotive TouchUp. Their shipping is super slow, they didnt even ship out the item untill 3-4 days after I had ordered which pissed me off because I was driving grilleless. Despite the wait, however, I think its well worth it. I know its hard to tell on the picture but the paint matched up perfectly. The difference in tones on the picture is due to the fact that I waxed my truck this week and the grille is yet to be waxed. Pics:

Looks good, maybe not quite as glossy as one from the factory though.

Looks nice... Was yours black or chrome to start?

Did you clear coat it?

 

How much paint did you use?

 

Mine was chrome to start. I sanded it down with 120, 240, then 400 wet. It came out super smooth in the end. I used one can of paint to do 4 coats on my grille and 3 coats on my emblem. I barely
had enough paint (still have some left in the can). I applied clear coat using DUPLICOLOR ACRYCLIC ENAMEL. I only did 3 coats of the enamel because the manufacturer recommends waiting a week to add any
additional coats. I'll be adding more coats later.

after all your clearcoat's are on, wait 48hrs and use polishing compound to bring out the gloss in the clearcoat.

 

You can also try wetsanding with 1000-2000 grit wetsandpaper, then polish. Would make it as glossy as the factory paint.

 

Polishing Compound? Isnt polish abrasive which would scratch the enamel? Not saying your wrong just trying to understand the product

 

Would sanding just get all the imperfections out? I was trying to find paper that fine but couldnt find it in my area, I may just order online.

Yea me too. I wanna wash my truck and wax the grille to see how it comes out. im just waiting for the paint to settle in a little and fully bond/dry.

Grille Emblem....looks like exact color match.

 

My local walmart has 1000 and 2000 wet/dry in the automotive section near the bondo and fiberglass stuff. Maybe try there before ordering online.

 

Wet sanding will take out some imperfections. Basically, you wrap it around a wet sponge and sand lightly. It will take down the high points and level them to the low spots, creating a glossy finish. It will eliminate the textured/orange peel look. Watch some demos on youtube, it really does work.

 

damn man looks awesome still trying to decide if i wana do it on my truck. and im pissed i went back to that junk yard and that effin grill was busted up!!
