There was an article in the paper here recently claiming that all new cars will have tech in them that allows big bro to know exactly how fast you are travelling relative to where you are. If you drive a certain speed over the posted limit for that spot you should expect a fine to show up in the mail.

The article went on to say that that it will become mandatory to have one retrofitted into any older vehicles.

I hope I read this on April fool's day because I could not believe what I was reading....

Even if it becomes mandatory for those reasons i bet as fast As they are put in cars there will be aftermarket parts to override it

Even larger tires would over rule such a system if it wasn't running on GPS.

GM is putting 4G in there trucks that you can access via WiFi. Up here in Canada it costs more than cell phone data though so it's basically a gimmick

now someone just needs to design the passenger side of their vehicle to fold back into a perfectly flat bed...

I have a hard time seeing the point. My phone offers hotspot capabilities and I believe any of AT&T's plans include tethering at this point (mine does). So, why would I want to pay extra to add a vehicle to my plan when my phone already handles it?

I don't even want OnStar type systems, and would remove the 'black box' capability if there were an easy way. We have enough intrusion as it is.

While I'm a tech fan for the most part, sometimes I see/read about this stuff and it makes me want to go off grid. Which isn't easy to do and live in the real world anymore.

As far as the speeding ticket deal, the concept has been in place, and I think used in some states, based on toll both passes/scanners. Not the same level as mentioned here of course but pretty much the same.

Red light cameras are all the rage in some places. Although some cities (at least smaller ones in our area) who have used them for a few years are now removing them. While others are installing. Go figure?

id be one to speed down to the government for a revolt... its about revenue, not public safety. basic road design would dictate it is safe to travel 80mph on a freeway, even though the speed limit is 65. look at how straight the speedway and how wide the lanes are.

I was curious how GMs vehicles worked as for the wifi. I can't say but figured it'd be like satelite radio where they give you like 90 days then have to pay for it. If so then it's useless imo also, just use phone data. Yet my mom had a kindle with data that was included on it years ago so wasn't sure if they somehow could do that but doubt it since the kindle was just for books so wouldn't use a lot of data.

wifi in car is pretty easy to facilitate. I'm setting up a wifi based system in a vehicle for a customer. Check out a company called Cradlepoint. they make a 4g router that you can set up on its own data plan. Then you have a WLAN and LAN in the vehicle. Gives you a lot of options for nifty gadgets. It's becoming more affordable. You don't want to know how expensive a mobile satellite based internet solution is, though.

My wife's 2014 Prius has some sort of wifi, not sure exactly, I don't drive it much. You have to pay for the service so not sure what the point of it is except another bill. She uses her phone data.
