Why does my Heater SUCK!!

So I just did a full engine rebuild, the thermostat, water pump and coolant on my 2.7..

With my truck at operating temp it seems like the heater is making choices on its own whether or not to be hot or luke warm! I dont get it.

Any ideas?

 

did you install a radiator flush port so you can purge all the air out?

its most common to get a big trapped pocket of air in the heater core so it doesn't put out enough heat. also confirm the flow valve functions and is adjusted correctly.

but even when working correctly it takes 10-15 minutes to fully warm up the engine and kick out good hot heat

 

Feel the heater hoses going into the firewall under the hood. If they are cold or luke warm then yeah, you need to bleed the air out of the heater core.

 

Or just wait another week or 2 and you won't need the heater..:} But yea I vote air entrapment in the heater core .

Cool thanks. I will do my best to bleed it out. I can drive to go steelhead fishing for example for most the day and it never gets Hot..

 

Yep, air lock or less likely a blocked core. Park on an incline and open the radiator cap, run for a while so the air works its way out.

These are awesome, they make the highest point of the system the funnel and then you just wait for the thermostat to open. Toyota thermostat?

 

Check under the dash to make sure the cable housing didn't come undone. The cable housing came undone on both of my '96 Tacomas. If it comes undone it basically leaves the valve which controls coolant flow in whatever position it was in last.

you can find em in all the auto parts stores and when water comes out all the air is gone and you put the cap back on it

We had my truck up to operating temp and ran it for about an hour. It did take a little bit of coolant. However, using a lazer temp gauge it would appear that my thermostat isnt opening?? the upper hose was reading like 180* where as the lower hose only like 63*...

Also the hose going into the heater core was hot, coming out it is not.

 

The only sure way to test the core is to disconnect the hoses and hook up the garden hose to one side of it. Making sure the valve is open, you blow water thru it, and if it comes out the other end, your good, if not, it's toast.
