I'm going to install a new aftermarket stereo with GPS. Where is the recommended location for the GPS antennae. I really hate those magnetic circular discs on the roof, but I guess theres no alternative. Do you think I can just leave the antennae stuck on top of the dash?

    Thanks

I have mind on passenger side dash wedged in between the dash and the window.

I had it under the dash and got the same signal strength. As long as there is no metal above it, it will work pretty much anywhere. The signal is coming from space so 1/16 inch of plastic/cardboard isnt going to affect it much.

do like i do on all my installs... under the dash above teh vents.. the dash isnt metal.. it doesnt stop the gps signal... so why let a thief know you have a gps? I have done this on at least 30 installs, including my own and not a single issue.right behind the radio on top of a vent duct between it and the dash is a good spot... nice clan install with nothing on ur dash to clutter it up.

I'll have to give that a try next time I'm in the dash. What about satalite radio, had the same result?

Mine is stuck to the underside of the dash. No problems with reception. I check the signal strength and I have all satellites.

Reviving a super old post here...anyone have luck mounting the GPS antenna inside the dash on a newer head unit? I'm using an Alpine ILX-507. The instructions say not to mount the GPS antenna inside of the dash. They also specify not to mount the GPS antenna near the head unit, otherwise reception becomes poor.

This unit has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Maybe it is more sensitive to interference. Everything I've found online seems to suggest that GPS antennas work just fine under the dash of the Tacoma. Curious what others have found...

Ive seen people do that and not complain and I’ve had antennas on top of the dash. The problem with that though is if you face sort of away from the satellite it’s pinging off of you may see your connection cut out since the metal roof obstructs as opposed to the antenna on top of the roof. What you could do is tuck it in the dash where it’s accessible from the glovebox region so if the reception sucks you can easily relocate instead of having to pull the headunit.

One interesting thing to note is the instructions do not say to mount the GPS antenna outside of the vehicle. The instructions recommend on top of the dash towards the passenger side, but not right underneath the A-pillar. I haven't pulled the old radio out yet, so I'm not sure how hard it would be to cleanly route the cable to the top passenger side of the dash.

I've installed a few android head unit GPS antennas inside the dash. They seem to work fine.
