My problem with this is that people would know if they had it even if there wasn't a button.

The thing makes a shitload of noise when it kicks in...people would be saying wtf is going on if they didn't know they had it.

I'm more curious about whether toyota CA is just trying to cover their ass.

I recognize that what I speculated long ago about the definitions isn't correct. Was just a guess at trying to explain it.

So according to this chart with TRAC engaged the engine output isn't regulated in H4 (4Hi) which is what you would want your truck to be in while going through mud anyway. If you are crawling through technical parts of a trail it wouldn't matter so much that the engine output is regulated, it's when you need to power through mud you wouldn't want engine output to be reduced.

In any event a locker is a huge advantage in offroad situations but it doesn't make sense that the other 4x4 models would only give you the advantage of an A-LSD in 2WD. That would almost be like giving you a locker in a 4x4 and only being able to activate it in 2wd.

Too bad a Toyota technical rep couldn't clarify this and save us arguing..lol!

OK, I am from Canada as well, and I think what we have here is either false advertisement or press people not knowing what they are talking about. Non-TRD Off Road trucks DO NOT have A-TRAC. They have an brake assisted LSD. The Off Road is the only one with A-TRAC.

To prove and settle this, here is two photos of a TRD OR and TRD Sport engine compartments. The A-TRAC equiped trucks have a different brake controller to handle the system.

The lighter grey truck in the photos is the Sport and the darker one is the Off Road. You can see the sport has a vacuum ABS controller and the OR has a different one.

I have a non TRD SR5 and mine has the same brake controller as the Sport.

    Hopefully this settles the issue...
