My clutch replacing efforts

So this is going to be my journal for the next few days.
Background: I am attempting to replace my clutch because it is slipping if i dont feather foot the damn thing. Iv done all my suspension work myself but had never done anything like this. well needless to say I worked on it for 7 hours today with my dad. and we dont even have the transmission out yet..... Im waking up at 6 tomarow to attempt to get it out and replace the clutch and hobefully get the tranny back on before schol at 12:30. I was working my ass off so i didnt take a whole bunch of pictured but heres a couple.

Anyways Im feeling pretty damn overwhelmed at this point. I need encouragement. Ill have more tomarow.

 

Whew. I'm kind of in a similar boat. I've done suspension and stuff, but never screwed with anything major under the hood. I need to replace my cv axles soon, but don't have the courage to start the project.

Hey, at least you have a paved driveway. Mine consists of gravel and weeds.

 

That is very true. Im totaly past teh point of no return though. Kind of starting to get nervous

and it could be worse you could have no help and on a gravel driveway

Ok i dont know if anyone cares about this thread but heres an update.
Day #2: spent around 4 hours in the morning working on it. Finally got the transmission out. Getting the two top bolts out took almost an hour and half by itself.


I replaced the throw out bearing, pilot bearing, pressure plate, and clutch disk



This is a picture of my old clutch disk that was worn down past the rivets.... no wonder I was having problems


So I start putting everything back together tomarow and hope to have it done by tomarow night. I dont know how people say this takes 6 hours. So far iv been working on it for 11 and im still far from done.

Hey thanks a lot guys! I know I was in over my head on this one. but i think your right. hard parts over and theres light at the end of the tunnel. I jsut hope everything works when i put it back together

 

Alright! Still going at it! From my experience, doing any task for the first time takes twice as long as when you're experienced at it. At least now you know how to replace a clutch!

 

Yup. and that was my thinking going into it. I knew it was going to be a major pain but at least I have new knowledge and I know my truck that much better than I did before

 

Yeah I'm impressed that you braved this amount of work in the first place. I would have probably chickened out and paid someone to do it. Kudos!

 

Yea well seeing as I dont have the $1200 to pay someone to do it I wasnt really left with any other choice.

 

takes six hours with a lift, tranny lift, air tools, and experience lol. i give you two thumbs up... after its done it will give you a high sense satisfaction that you did it and that you saved a ton of money.

 

$1200 for a clutch job!?

Dude, you could do that yourself in a few days and with some encouragement from TW!

HA exactly what im doing! but the encouragement is key. I really appreciate it to everyone for the kind words. And now I can see why they charge so much for replacing a clutch.

 

be carefull on reinstall of the tranny. Keep her supported and dont try to use the bolts to pull the tranny to the block. you would be surprised how easy it is to snap a lobe on the bellhousing, then youd be cutting into the money you saved.

I replaced the clutch in my old Chevy 2500 4x4 a few years ago and it was a bitch. I also took the transmission and transfer case out as one piece. Very heavy. When I did mine I had trouble getting the transmission back on, couldn't quite get it lined up properly. Ended up splitting the transmission and transfer case and it made it a lot easier.
