Oil Change Questions - new owner

Hey Everyone,

I just bought a 2005 with about 30k miles. I figured it was time to switch to Mobil 1 since I'm a huge believer in synthetic oil, but after I filled it back up with the perscribed 6.1 quarts, it seemed a bit overfilled. I couldn't really be sure though because the dipstick seems impossible to read, especially at night by flashlight!

I'm looking for advice as to the oil capacity other people acutally use, and, am I going blind, or is the dipstick a pain?

05 4cyl or v6?? if its the v6....its 5.5 quarts, and i think the 4cyl is almost 5 quarts. where did you see 6.1 quarts at??

 

It's the 2.7 L...

Quoting from my owner's manual:

Oil Capacity (drain and refill)
L (qt., Imp. qt.)

2tr-FE engine
With filter 5.8 (6.1, 5.1)
Without filter 5.1 (5.4, 4.5)


That says to me that the capacity with filter is 5.8L or 6.1 qts.

I have not changed the oil on my new truck yet, only 1600 miles so far so it's not time, but on my 2004 with the 2.7 I found that perhaps from completely empty it may have been 6 quarts, however, from the design of the oil pan on that truck combined with the slight angle of my driveway, it never completely drained, so I stoped at 5 quarts, started the truck and then checked and added as needed. It may have added another 20 minutes to the job, but compared with overfilling the oil it seemed well worth the extra time.

Sounds like a good strategy. Always easier to add than to take away for me.

 

I do the same underfill/run/let oil settle/add more type oil change as well. I went synthetic on my bike, but flinch at the high oil cost when it comes time to change it. The bike spins at some crazy high RPMs so I figure the synthetic is doing some good in there.

 

Bike, huh? I'm using Mobil 1 in two of mine. Plan on changing two Harleys from Syn3 to Mobil 1 next change. What bike you got?

Nice! My 600 (636) is an '05 ZX-6R. Definitely they are crank spinners.

 

Oil is always still in your motor.

 

sorry to bring up an old thread but this little typo in toyotas owners manual about 6.1 quarts in the 2TR-FE 4 cylinder engine has me going crazy! i can't get in more than 4.9 quarts with an oil filter change. I think this is why my truck is leaking in the rear main seal because of all the years it had the 6.1 quart oil changes. this dipstick is also a pain to read! anybody else having this problem?

 

On my 07 the dip srick is hard to read...scratching it up with some rough sandpaper in a "X" pattern seems to help.

 

Another good tip. My auto trans dipstick is hard to read also.
