I dont know about the D40 but i have the D90 and love it. My buddy got the Rebel and I think its a nice camera too. I havent got to use his very much but from what i can tell the cannon works pretty good. The only thing i dont like about my nikon is how heavy it is. But that is with a 55mm-200mm lens. All the pics in my profile are taken with my D90 but my wife only uses the auto setting so i havnt got any here in Iraq that i could post with my manual settings. You will love your cam. Good deal too

That camera with the kit lens will be fine. Use a large memory card and take lots of pictures using all of the settings. IMO, pick up a tripod as your next purchase. This will allow you to take pictures early morning and at sunset. It will also allow you to get into your own family pictures. Don't get sucked into impulse buys on camera equipment.
Late last year I attended a wedding that the photographer hired for the photos was using a XSI with the kit lens as her secondary camera, I was blown away by her images, talent! Spend time not money to take better pictures. As I noted in an earlier post, pick up a book on exposure. Join a image hosting site like PBase or Flickr. I prefer and use PBase, $23.00 a year for 500 megabytes of storage. Right now I have 3340 images on the site and have used 395 mg of my storage.
Using sites like these allows other people to see your work, people can also comment on your work. As of this morning my pictures have had more than 1230515 hit's. Makes me smile that people have looked at my work.
It's funny, stuff that I thought was a homerun might receive no attention and other stuff gets a hundred views a day.
It's not the cost or the brand of the camera that makes the photographer.

the D40 is great for fast action stuff. me and my friends went snowboarding yesterday and I took my camera to get some action shots.

Here is how clear they come out, although I did use an external flash (SB-800)

I had no problems with the shutter delay, I just pushed the button right when i wanted to take the picture. i didn't have to anticipate at all

I think I am going to be happy once I start shooting. I have seen some amazing shots from regular people.

I'll echo everything said about shooting as much as possible. With an 8gb card, and as cheap as 1Tb hard drives are, put the thing on continuous drive (multiple pictures with one shutter press and hold) and start filling up cards. Narrow down to your favorites on your computer. You'll start learning what works and getting better in no time.

The whole brand loyalty thing is completely erroneous when it comes to such a subjective topic as photography. Canon and Nikon both make exceptionally good cameras.

This is what makes a good photograph : photographer > glass (lens) > camera body

The D40+18-200mm VR is a rocking setup for an entry level SLR guy.
What the D40 lacks is the AF motor, High speed (I think it's 2-3fps), and bracketing.

The build quality on the Rebels IMHO is cheap. Nikon in this price range is more solid.
The Canon 20/30/40/50/Ds and up are Awesome and so are the Nikons in this price range.

    Personally I have a D300.
My reasons: Bracketing, Low-light ISO ability, and 6fps. (The price was right too)
It had nothing to do with the fact that it had Nikon written on it.

I love the D40 now. I would have liked the AF motor on the camera as well as full frame and a few other perks but for $300 it is great for me to start with. I picked up the 35mm AF f/1.8 t go with it and will be swapping out the 18-55mm kit lens for the 18-55mm VR. I will use that for a while and save for the 18-200 VR.

Ok so I know absolutley nothing about cameras. The only camera I have ever owned is a little $90 nikon cool pix that I carry on my web gear firefighting so it doesnt exactly work too great anymore. What the hell does DSLR mean? What would be a good entry camera? Not trying to break into photography, just to have a camera. Any ideas?

    dslr
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSLR

for a beater, i personally wouldnt get a dslr. its expensive and bulky. i would get a retractable lens camera with at least 8mp. my girl has a cheapo sony that fits snugly in a pocket and tales decent pics. this thread is talking about the d40 which unfortuneatly is being discontinued and is, dont quote me, like the entry dslr for nikon. im still photography retarded myself. :D

Ok thanks. :D I think I am going to check some out tomorrow. I want a good camera. The one I have now I have to take about 10 pics of the same thing and pic out which one is best because the pictures come out horrible, my blackberry takes better pictures. :(
