I went to pull some guy I know out of the mud today and I didnt have enough power and the clutch started to smoke. I stopped right when that happened but it still smells. How bad is that on a relatively new clutch (5k miles)?

Smoking a clutch is never good news... slippage might be around the corner.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Well its not good for it but I did the same thing to mine over Christmas and I let it cool down for the rest of the day and went for a nice easy drive and the smell went away after about 20 miles so all I did was take some life off it in the long run. I still figure to get 100K out of it. If it will still shut off when you put it in 3rd or 4th and try to take off nice and easy then you are okay. If it just slips then you might want to start planning for a clutch.

Good deal buddy, yeah it might take a day or two for the smell to go away but if it was just for a few secs you will probably get away with it this time. Take it easy on it and look to see if you get any shutter or anything on take off. In a couple days of normal driving do the higher gear test on it and you will have a better idea of what you have. You can also try pulling off with the e brake on and see if it slips or not.

PS. Good luck getting some sleep tonight.

Didn't you, like just put a clutch in like last month?

Yeah, I burnt mine a little while ago doing parking lot snow donuts...smell went away that night, and no clutch problems ever since.

Even if the clutch is ok and lasts another 20k miles, the flywheel and other parts might be toast and have heatspots etc. from spinning the clutch or from racing/abuse.

hopefully the chatter/vibration you mentioned goes away!

but.. ive done that before too, especially when i used to drag race it was a more common occurance to accidently burn the clutch a bit.
