Many people run X12.5's on 8" wide rims. I had a Bronco that I ran 35x12.5 mudders on 15x10 rims but many ran them on 15x8 rims. Some even recommended the narrower rim because the tire bead held more pressure against the rim when aired down for wheeling. Some also claim the sidewalls being pulled in more prevent side puncture too. To be fair, there are many arguments against the narrow rims too. One drawback to the narrower rim is uneven wear. It is hard to get the tread flat on the ground with the sides being pulled in so much.

Pretty sure 315/70/17 is the same size as 35/12.5/17, so it should run just the same as your current tires. There are differences between manufacturers though. I also would advise a wider tire, many are available in 9" wide, which falls in the 8.5-11" range.
