I have magnetic drain plugs for all my motorcycles. Some collect a gray fuzz which must be metallic. I just got one for my 2002 Taco and will install it at next oil change. Are they worth it? Who knows.

    back to bone stock.
why dont you stick a regular magnet onto the oil pan, near the drain plug? then remove magnets, remove drain plug, and the filings in the proximity of the hole will just get sucked out.

i thought about it, but have yet to implement my cheapo idea. my porsche has a magnetic drainplug..i do not see much caught up with it.

unless your having tranny issues you dont see much shaving in cars, mostly mortorcycles since its a wet tranny and you feather the clutch so much. if you keep oil changed regularly there not alot of need for them in cars and trucks

I have been doing that on my cars for years. I read about it somewhere - can't remember where. I don't have any proof that it actually works, but it doesn't hurt anything so what the hell.

My first two Toyota pickups came with magnetic drain plugs; I was somewhat surprised that my Tacoma's didn't have them. However, I only started seeing some metal "fuzz" when my '87 had about 150,000 miles on it.

That said, it probably wouldn't hurt to stick a fridge magnet onto the pan somewhere near the drain plug. At least the Patent Office thinks it's not a totally useless idea:

Edit: Remember, though, that your engines are mostly aluminum -- the magnet isn't going to catch any of these shavings.
