Topper (cap) how to

I am thinking of putting on an aluminum topper (cap) on my "09" Tacomna Access Cab and was wondering if anyone could tell me how they are mounted on the bed rails? Thanks DocD

 

I can't say on the aluminium toppers, but on my fiberglass ARE uses clamps. One end of the clamp goes in the bedrail and the other end on the lip of the topper. A bolt connects the two pieces in order to tighten them down.

 

aluminums are held on with clamps as well. We use a different type on aluminum then fiberglass, but still clamps like explained above.

Thanks a lot for quick responce, These are the clamps that I used on my ford topper, but I don't think they will work on the Tacoma, I will have to look for some different clamps, gavonder, looks like a good solid mount, did you have to drill through the bed rail? Thanks again to all. Doc

 

DocD, would you purchase the aluminum top or is it custom made? Also, why an aluminum one v. fiberglass?

I am curious because I have considered adding a top to my Taco but I haven't done too much research on the subject.

It was installed at the place I bought it from. They just drilled through the "tabs" on the cap & then mounted to the pieces of aluminum that were slid into the track.

I had clamps like yours on my old truck. Those will not work.

Crom, (long story) A guy who lives on "My Walk" just sold his Tacoma ("07")which was the same color as mine and purchased a Tundra, he didn't trade in the topper because the topper had been sent back to the factory for some warranty work, so as I was walking by his place today he asked if I would be interested, (he had seen my Tacoma in my yard) and although I had planned to keep my Tacoma Naked, he gave me a very good price, and when he gets it back from the service work I will take a close look, (I am not even real sure what make it is) but I have seen it parked at his home (one notices when the truck is much like yours) and it looked good, I have a love/hate relationship with toppers, in some situations they are great but I think I like the look of the truck without, but to get one that is color matched at a good price is hard to turn down. Ive got an aluminum topper on my 07 and the clamps are very similar to the ones posted for the ford but the bottom piece is made to slide into the rail. Those standard ones might work. Mine is a lear and there is not enough lip to drill through like on a fiberglass topper. I love my aluminum one, its super light (rough guess 75-100lbs), fits good and serves the purpose. Yea some of the fiberglass ones look better but I got it used for super cheap and can't complain. I can try to get some pics later if you want.

 

Thanks, The ford ones don't miss by much! I may try and grind down the top and use them upside down. (I wouldn't be out much if it didn't work) and I am sure I will be able to find correct clamps I just wanted to get an idea of what was used, , and I agree, the figerglass toppers look great, and are great, but can be a little spendy. and the aluminum ones have always served me well in the past. Received the topper today (he delivered it) being everyone was so helpful I thought I would post a couple of pictures, It is Good news/ Bad news The good news,the topper is like new!!! the bad news, he only had two clamps, I will try and locate a couple more tomorrow,

Wow I really like how the ARE mounts inside the rail. My Flippac is bolted through the rails. Kinda sucks that way. What are most installers/manufacturers using for the cabside of the truck bed? It isn't the same height as the side rails.
