Its great when facts are reported. Too bad All the general public knows is what they are spun from the evening news, which starts ignorance and fear. It seems like congress and ntsb are seeing a great opportunity to stomp on a "foreign" auto maker and make a U.S. automaker look like a better choice for the consumer, Like GM.....hmmmm

Thought that many here would like to read this article , as for the group hug comment , I 've just gotten sick of half of the threads on this awesome site degenerating into our side vs your side fingerpointing OP bashings .

Some are bitching about nothing agreed , but some are also getting destroyed for asking questions about their trucks as if daring to do so is some violation of the Official Tacoma Owners Club .

Links to this article have been posted several times over the last few weeks. The problem was that the title of the posts was not "FIRE DEATH AND DISTRUCTION" to get everyone to read it.

We should keep bumping this one for a while.

The single most dead on part of this whole thing.

This whole thing is a witch hunt by people who don't understand the technology and people who are too blind to realize that there are plenty of assholes out there willing to take advantage of the situation.

This is like the whole cell phone at the gas station thing. Look at how many people and even gas stations jumped on that one and there was absolutely zero evidence ever of a cell phone causing a fire at the pump. Yet no cell phone signs popped up at a lot of gas stations. its just not technically possible.

Hate to be the lone dissenter here, but PM completely ignores the possibility of a software glitch/race condition by presenting straw man arguments such as cell phone interference or hackers (really, has anyone ever mentioned these as potential causes?). As someone involved in the software industry, I know that there is no such thing as bug free software and I greatly suspect that Toyota throttle control has a bug buried deeply. They are one of the only manufacturers who will not allow outside vendors to access their Crash Data systems and crash investigators are routinely diverted or given useless data after these types of crashes.

Many engineers from my company have spent weeks, or even months, tracking down bugs attributed to our products and half the time, the bug is in the customer's system. Even the much sought after "five nines" reliability allows for 1 chance in 100,000 for a "downtime" event which, in this case, could be fatal.

I have no fear of driving my car, but am not ready to let Toyota off the hook for all of these incidents. I also have no doubt that these bugs are a part of our increasingly automated modern life and not worthy of the hand-wringing and sensational media coverage.
