Can I add transmission fluid?

I made a mistake and pulled the transmission bolt instead of the oil bolt but seen the color of it so i put it back on i prolly lost a quart or 2 tho. Can I add some more like 3 quarts to be safe and then just pull the over fill plug to let the extra come out. And do this without having to check the temperature of it?
Also does anyone have a pic where the transmission fill cap is?

Yes you can. Just have to full it through the over flow plug. When it starts to come out it is full. There is no fill cap for the tranny it is a sealed system. You just pump it in through the overfill plug.

 

so u pump it in through the overfill plug underneath the truck that is like a 5mm plug or something? and what do i need so that i can pump it in?

Read the link I posted. There's a lot more to it than just adding fluid (make sure you use the correct fluid..............................................................)

You have to ensure you have the correct level... which means using the diagnostic mode. Read the link, it's not to hard but you can't skip anything.

 

so I just cant just add some i have to drop all the existing and do everything the link says even tho the stuff i have in it is still good?
how much does the dealer charge to change the fluid?

Truth be told, I'm sure it will be fine if all you do is replace the same amount that came out. Buy a bottle pump, it's fairly easy. Read the link that was posted, lots of info there.

 

FYI, dealers will charge about $190 for the tranny flush.

 

You know I was under the truck today and did an oil change.
All I can say it I hope you don't do any other mods or service.

It is hard to make this mistake ... real hard.

Kind of like a surgeon taking off the head when the left foot was scheduled for removal .

I give you credit for trying but you loose points for not asking first if you are this unsure of what to do.

I'd stick to offering advice on things you know. This way if your info is incorrect, it won't cost someone else $4000 to fix a problem due to misinformation.

 

Please give a reason as to why not to fill it through the overfill plug! If you feel the need to post with out reason please don't as it is not funny he is asking for help. Now if you have a legitimate reason you should have posted it a few hours ago.

If I were you I would top it off using the over fill plug. You just drained some there is no need to follow all of the instructions in the link, which is a very good link and is how to drain and replace the fluid, but in your case just top it off. This is how your dealer will do it when you show up but charge you a ton.

 

Well then please give the correct info. As this is how the dealer will top off your fluid. I have read all of your how to about it, and I agree completely with you about swaping fluid. But as per my dealer they just fill it as I have stated. Now they may be incorrect but my truck is fine and I had this done in 2007

 

There has been a link posted with the correct procedure for the OP to follow so his question has been answered - with a detailed procedure with pics and video.

You don' fill from the overflow plug because that isn't the correct procedure. There is a FILL plug for that purpose. If you fill from the overflow the level won't be correct, and it is much simpler to fill the correct way. If he don't want to drain that's fine. Skip to the part about adding fluid. The tranny costs $4000 to replace. Perform the procedure correctly.

 

The correct info is in the link provided, which I wrote and performed many times, according to the Toyota factory Service Manual - which is they way the dealer would do it, and Toyota recommends. Is this good enough or do you need more?

You don't fill from the overflow plug. You fill from the 24mm fill plug on the top right side of the transmission.

 

The guy can't do an oil change -- do you feel comfortable with him doing the trans refill ?

I do not mean to slam him but ........ @ 4000.00 for a trans replacement just let him tow it in to a shop for repair

Well then OP please follow their instructions as I certainly would not like you to harm your vehicle. The steps I told you to perform are the ones that were done by my dealers on my truck some 3 yrs ago.

Please don't think I am saying the other way is incorrect because I certainly am not.
