22 for pests

I need a CHEAP 22 for knocking out a few local pests. If it will handle both LR and shorts, even better. Any suggestions?

Will a pellet gun work. Or do you need a 22

 

You can get a Marlin 22 at wallmart for like $99

 

I need to check that out. The walmart next to me doesnt carry guns but i think the one across town does.

u might need to get a bolt action, most semi autos wont cycle correct with shorts, however if you can stay with .22lr's than the Marlin 60 or ruger 10/22 is a good bet

 

Yea, I was thinking of a rifle with a magazine and the bolt action if I can get one. I would like the ability to shoot the shorts to dispatch the occasional critter w/o waking the neighbors and still take it out plinking with the LRs when I fell like it.

 

If you want a 22 but dont want the sound with it, they make a "silent" bullet called aguila. it does'nt use powder, just a primer.

I would go with a Ruger 10/22... I wouldn't waste my time with shorts, because 22lr's are a whole lot more plentiful around here anyways, and are very cheap.

 

Cool, I hadn't heard of these before. My options might be getting bigger!

 

x2 I would stay away from .22 shorts. to hard to find and are probably more expensive than the lr's

here is some stuff, its suppose to be very accurate and still quiet. 60gr bullets out of a .22....thats a bigger bullet than what I shoot out of my .223!

Yeah, they do. Aguila makes those too. It's full power but it's such a heavy bullet that it doesn't break the sound barrier.

I've used them. You still hear the ignition/explosion but you don't get the sharp "crack". They're definitely a little quieter.

dont waste your time with shorts. they are a pain in the butt to find and if you want to shoot both you will need to re-zero your rifle every time you switch. also, what sorts of critters are we talking here? rats and squirrels or beavers/possums? if it is beavers and such i would recommend you think about a 22mag or a 17hmr. but both of those will be louder than a 22lr. however, a 22lr will easily kill a beaver with a well placed shot. as far as bullets go, i would go with the cci mini-mag hollow points or a fairly heavy fmj which most 22 bullets are anyways

 

careful with the Colibri. not designed for a rifle barrel. the rounds can get stuck and if you shoot again, it'll be bad news. that said, i have shot a few boxes out of my 10/22 without any issues other than having to hand load each bullet.

i used to have a lever .22 that would feed them, but i got rid of it a while back.

 

I like my Marlin bolt action. My first rifle, it was something like $99 at Wal-Mart in the late 1980s. The current Marlin bolt action is...about $99 at Wal-Mart in the early 2010's.

You can probably pick up any one of the Marlin bolt .22 guns at a pawn shop for $50 or so and be happy with it. Just make sure it cycles and ejects (good extractor) and you're set.

 

Those power less cartridges suck though my daisy shoots faster than those do because all thats propelling the bullet is the lkittle bit of gas created by the primer.

 

I would suggest a Ruger 10/22. I know they are a little more money but you get semi-auto and a very reliable gun. No other gun of any caliber is more versatile and is a piece of cake to modify and add stuff. You can start with the cheapest black synthetic stock and it will shoot as good as a highly modified one.
