Anyone know about more power?

I have an 09 reg cab 4x4, with the 4 cyl motor, and have desperate need for more power to tow with. The trailer isn't big, a 5x8 enclosed, but at best it will only do about 65 with no wind. I put a topper on it to help with the wind resistance, and to keep the dogs from jumping out of it, but no help at all. I think it just added weight. the trailer and bike only weigh about 1300 lbs total, so this shouldn't hurt at all. I traded my 05 3/4 ton off on it, and realize this could be part of it (being used to big motor) but this is bad, if a 10 mph headwind comes up, it will only go 45-50 help!!

 

hey Butte! yeah I know I didn't get the tundra motor with the prius mileage, but i can't find a cold air, and haven't tried the exhaust. I bought this one because it was the tacoma I could own outright, no payments, and at the time i was'nt sure how long work was going to hold out, knowing my chevy was'nt going to hold out for sure...

From what I understand the CAI won't do much for our trucks (the stock box is plenty big and unrestrictive). Doug Thorley headers are shown to provide some HP and Tourqe, and the exhaust may help a little. It's still not going to be a lot. Have you tried running in 4th? I had an old truck that was gutless that couldn't handle the freeway in a crosswind in 5th, but kick it down to 4th and it ran like a champ. It killed the mileage but did the job.

 

x2 on the headers, and get a dynomax super turbo muffler (about $50) I have herd of people having great gains with the muffler alone but headers will make a HUGE difference!
I would research gains on a cold air intake or drop in air filter. Also look into removing your secondary air filter.

I have a 2.7L and I always have to pop it into 4th on hills when hauling stuff. Don't get discouraged with your truck it's a good truck and it's nice not having a payment, your toyota will last forever!

 

headers? the 3rz and 2tr both have a OEM tubular exhaust header. if anyone has dyno charts of oem vs the DT lt header please post. i suspect very little diff. 4cyl are only ~160hp, kinda weak and the oem stuff can flow this well. if you want power you need to send some cash on a Alpine sc kit or do a custom turbo setup (turbo is the way to go).

 

Your best bang for your buck is going to be the new Alpine Developments Supercharger.

I wouldn't even waste your time or money on the headers, or other non-sense out there until you take the first step to making some power (forced induction). The dollar per horsepower ratio is unbeatable with a SC.

 

I have done a lot of reading since I have a 4 banger on the way and it seems to be true the hp gains from exhaust and headers or for intakes can be very little. You may gain hp in top end but lose tourque on bottom end. Supercharger will add hp but it costs 3200-3600 bucks and then my question would be can everything in the driveline handle that extra hp?

65 is very respectable for a 4 banger. Can't ask for too much. The fact that it can even tow 3000-3500pounds is amazing.

Does anybody here actually have a supercharger on their Tacoma? I'ld be interested to know what kind of mpg loss you experience with that.

 

Go for the supercharger if you have the money. Otherwise, remove the secondary air filter and throw on a reusable hi-flow replacement filter, headers, and cat-back exhaust. URD is a good source, as mentioned.

 

From what i read previous threads, the doug thorley headers beat any combo of exhaust & CAI for the money. Thats from people who done all 3. Taco505 has a good write up on his install.

 

Why wouldnt you start with the small stuff? Increased exhaust flow is a necessity when talking about a boosted application. Do header, exhaust, drop in and see where you stand.

Start with better intake, Header, and Muffler.
