    hey,
so when changing to larger tires. from say my 235 70 r16s to say 31" tires there will be a change in gearing and therefor a change in odometer reading over a given distance. this will throw off a mileage calculation by a few points at least i would think

    calculations.

    235 70 r16

    235x.7=
    164.5 x2=
    329 / 25.4=
    12.95+16=
    28" dia
    ---------------
    28x3.14=
    90.95" circumference
    ---------------
    31"dia

    31x3.14=
    97.39" circumference

    that roughly a 6% difference

    thoughts?

is there a way to match things up so the odometer will read correctly?

As far as I know there is no way to correct the Odom in our trucks. However if you have a scanguage it keeps the correct mileage. I check the scanguage against my math everytime I fuel up.

True, but still, it's nice to have everything synchronized with what it should be. MPG, Speed, Odo, etc. It also helps with the gears and shifting.

I drive w/my GPS on. Good thing too. With 35" tires on my Gen 1, Speedo off appx 8mph. Big difference!! Is there really no way to recallibrate?

the difference is actually a parabolic curve. so the faster you go the more the difference is from read to actual. at what speed is yours out by 8mph?

there must be some way! how does the speedo actually work? is it electronic? or is it mechanically driven?

    Nice!

I was searching around on the Hypertech website in hopes I'd find one of their products would do everything a Scangauge would do PLUS give transmission temps/oil pressure, etc.

    Nope....
    (damn, I was hoping)

Just drive it like you stole it!!! GPS works too though. I have pretty much memorized the speed difference so I don't use it anymore. with 33's: 67 is actually about 75; and the difference gradually goes down from there.

well say you have 35" tires and your odometer says 5000 miles you have actually gone 5857 miles. thats a big difference! not to mention the extra wear on your engine from trying to turn the big ass tires.
might not make that much of a difference but...

Now that is kind of odd. Should be the other way around I think. Have you done any other gearing changes?
