Oil....Synthetic v Conventional

For the first time I haven't purchased used so I have the luxury of running synthetic or conventional motor oil from the start. I've always been told that running synthetic after using conventional for XXX,XXX miles is a waste of money. I finally have the opportunity to start fresh and I'm just looking to see what everyones opinions are, and what you typically run. It may help to know that I live in the Northeast and I don't do a lot of towing. Opinions and suggestions would be great.

 

if i were you...i'd wait till you have about 1k miles on the odo, then do an oil change to get rid of any break in metals out with something good like mobil1, royal purple, pennzoil platinum, or amsoil......5w30 will be fine for you, and then stick with that brand of oil and do 5k mile oil changes. your motor will thank you.

my vote is for mobil1 or pennzoil platinum.........i have used both, and both are great!!

 

Synthetic is nice if you can afford it. You will get better gas milage and your engine will start easier in the cold. Also, synthetic reduces wear, so your engine should last longer.
Synthetic is a little pricey though at about $5 a quart.

 

Ive always been a fan of Castrol. Honestly though, the best oil is the oil that gets changed often.

 

you can get a 5 quart jug of mobil1 or pennzoil platinum at walmart for right around $20.

 

I get the penzoil high mileage...for the 105k mi. odometer reading. It used to be around 12-13...now it's $15. Inflation taking its toll...and if you're seeing it at Walmart then its a reality . LOLZ

 

I decided to purchase the Mobil 1 Synthetic. What's everyones idea for oil filter. According to Toyota, they ONLY Recommend using their own oil filter. I'm thinking the Fram Off Road filter is fine, anyone have any insight?

 

The Toyota filter with a new oil plug gasket runs about $6 so I plan to just keep two or three of those on hand.

 

After what I've read and heard you couldn't give me a Fram oil filter. Cheapest made POS on the market.

I'd go for Toyota or Mobil or Pure One. In fact, the SuperTech filter from Wal-Mart for $2.50 is a FAR superior filter to the Fram.

As for oil, I like synthetic because it lubes faster in a cold start and experts say that cold starting is where 90% of your engine wear happens. Also, you have to change conventional oils every 6 months whether or not you drive the vehicle. They go "stale" and develop acids due to contamination from combustion byproducts. Synthetics do not, so they are more economical for vehicles that don't get driven much, and I have a couple of those.

 

Don't wanna step on any toes: but who do you think makes the wal mart filter? I really don't think there much difference in oil filters there all made by the same companies with different names

 

Champion Labs, Fram, Purolator, or Wix (Dana) makes the huge majority of the filters.

I buy NAPA filters even if the service or knowledge is below par.
NAPA filters are made by WIX.

 

i always use mobil1 filters or bosch filters......havent had any problems with either of those.

 

I don't know who actually makes the SuperTech (Wal-Mart) filters, but I've been using them for 5 years with good results so far. Also, I've cut them apart to see what they're catching, and they are definately not the Fram design. They have metal end caps on the element, are well-sealed, and have a much better pressure relief valve. If you look at this photo, it appears to be a clone of the Bosch as far as the end plate design and relief valve spring, but with a larger element.

 

I wouldn't doubt it, and nothing wrong with Champion IMO. My point was that it was a well made filter at a bargain price and definately superior in construction to a Fram.

 

I was told by the service dept where I purchased my truck to wait until I have 30,000 km before I switch over to synthetic?

 

they are bullshitting ya man. go atleast 1k miles, then swap over. changing then will remove any break in metals from your oil, and you can use the synthetic then....isnt going to hurt a thing.

 

Using Mobil 1 on my V6 , 6spd o6 Taco. I have been using Toyota filters , but always used Wix for the most part. When you look at the big diesel engines that have huge filters, air , oil, water etc. You will find Wix on many of them. I do have some friends who are in the trucking business for 50yrs and have always used and relied on Wix.
I like to stay in touch with my local dealer and in general try to do most of my maint myself..... so I buy my filters from them as there is very little difference in price. They might even give you a break on some filters $ if you buy in bulk. If you get a decent dealership then they realize you are trying to take car of your car ..

From what I have read you should wait 1000 miles before the switch. I don't see why my dealer would bullshit me about this? They make more money on a synthetic change anyhow?

Seems there are definately two different ideas on this.
