Is my load to big

I just started towing with my 2nd Gen. TRD a (26'9")(2680 Dry)(5000 Gvw.) Skamper-lite travel trailer and seem to be getting the odd stare and even someone come over from another campsite question me about towing this size of a trailer with a Tacoma.
Now I started looking around and notice most Tacoma's are towing much smaller loads.
Am I missing something or am I alright pulling this trailer.

P.S. The truck handles the tow no problem even up steep grades.

Hahaha, but no, we used to pull a good bit with our FJC and it seemed to hold up fine. I've hauled items right about the same size as yours and all was fine. Just had to take it nice and slow. (that's what she said)

 

The ability of the truck to go uphills and pull the weight is not nearly as important as its ability to stop the load reliably and maintain stability in cross winds.

Personally if I had to tow a trailer that was anywhere near the vehicle's maximum capacity frequently, I would upgrade to a vehicle with a higher capacity.

 

My thoughts are that according to the trailer weight and the capacity of your TRD with tow package, you're fine. These things were made specifically to tow!

I have to admit, my 6-sp manual did a decent job of pulling a 4000lb skiboat over the mountains and kept it on the road when the boat trailer had a flat(could be superior driver)

 

I'm not sure I understand the eye rolling and sarcasm......The TRD Sport + towing is rated to tow 6500lbs and the OP is towing a 5000lbs trailer. I know there are factors to be considered but this seems in line with what this truck is rated to do. If you don't feel comfortable towing with your truck than by all means don't. But implying that the folks that disagree with you are unintelligent......? As far as the springs are concerned, this is a Canadian spec'd truck so it would have come with a factory 4 leaf spring pack....No TSB required.

 

Around here sarcasm is the only thing people know. That is what is great about the internet. People that would sit quietly like lamb become lions. No accountability. The truck is rated for it. If you can slow down and stop with the load, then enjoy.

 

OK...I'll spell it out.
Towing is not just how much weight(maximum) it will pull.
It's more about stopping (effectively, not eventually) and turning (safely)
Some people figure if it will do it...fine.
Some look for a margin of error, meaning I want a truck that's boss over the trailer, not the other way around.
I have towed with a Jeep Grand Cherokee....plenty of power, not plenty of brakes and chassis.

Everyone posting in this thread has experiencing with towing, right? I sure hope people aren't simply looking at specs and basing their decision off of that.

i think your both right. if the truck is rated to tow it and has the power then fine. but if he has upgraded to the tow package dont you think they would have accounted for the other aspects of towing? like braking and steering. i think it will be fine in all aspects seeing as how its rated for more than what your towing.

 

I don't think the weight is the biggest concern, crosswinds would be for me...and passing semis(bow wake)
Good thing you have tandem axles.
I would be concerned if you have an automatic trans...heat could be a problem.

 

So we are debating if the truck can stop a load of a trailer that if it has working breaks will be used to assist in stopping said vehicle. If the driver can:

1) control the load both in stopping the load and under adverse conditions.
2) has experience pulling the load.
3) truck is rated for the load
4) he has demonstrated ability to do those listed in 1.
5) What is the complaint?

Have I ever towed a load. Yes. Have I towed my Jeep Grand Cherokee from Atlanta to Knoxville TN. Was I able to stop. Yes. Was I in an accident. No. Did anyone get hurt in my towing no. If you are towing less then a 1k+ from rated weight you should be fine. Since the manufacture is going to take stopping ability into consideration.

I don't need a F350 to pull a jet ski.

 

I don't question for a second that there are determining factors and margins of error to be considered when making a towing choice. It is my opinion in THIS case that when properly equipped and a 1500lb margin that this truck is right for THIS job. I'm certainly not a tow expert but I have done my share. The OP has already stated that he feels comfortable and confident while in use. If he felt that the handling characteristics and stopping power were compromised I'm sure he would not continue.

 

I pull about the same size and weight trailer, with WD hitch and sway bars. I pulled it half way across Canada (to your neck of the woods Squad314) last summer with no problems.
