Auxillary gas tank?

I'm new to Tacoma ownership and look to y'all for guidance. Is it possible to add another gas tank to my '09 dbl cab TRD? I like long road trips and don't like to stop too often. Any ideas?

 

its def possible, they sell auxillary tanks that mount inside the truck bed, just make sure you have the 4 leaf pack to handle the weight

 

I'm not aware of any aux tanks that bolt up under the truck but with enough money I'm sure you can get custom tanks built

 

Yes it has been done before. It was done by www.ExpeditionsWest.com They put a 22 gallon tank on a 1st gen, right where the spare tire would go.

 

I've been thinking about getting one too. I can't list the sites because I never bookedmarked them, but I have found a few sites that have the aux takes that mount under the truck and on in the bed.

The tanks ranged in size from 20gal upto 40 (if I remember correctly).

I don't think weight is an issue. I have had my factory tank low to the point that the low fuel light came on, and there was no noticiable difference in my suspention from empty to full. Figure a 21 gallon factory tank, so I put in 18 gal, maybe 18.5 gallons.

If I,m not misstaken, water weights 7.33lbs per/gallon, and gas is less then that. I'm not sure what gas weights, but if it weighted 7lbs per/gal, then your only looking at 280lbs extra for a 40 gallon aux tank.

I like the idea of an extra tank. Never want to be stuck out somewhere where there is no gas station. Plus, it's easier to take advanage of lower prices at the pump, and ride out the higher prices when they descide to play the up and down game on us.

 

Better Built makes a 36 gallon "transfer tank" that fits in the bed of my Xtra-Cab Taco in front of the wheel well. I needed to trim the mounting tabs with a die cut, but it works and doesn't take up much room. Along with my regular tank, it gives me a range of 1,200 miles. If you are near an Army base that has a lot of helicopters there is a chance there are butyl rubber fuel blivets. The smallest is 75 gallons and is round so it can be rolled and it has d-rings on either side. Since it's collapsable you can "pressurize" it by sitting on top and "sqeezing" the fuel into your tank. Those should sell for no more than $50. The Better Built cost $316 in Alaska.

 

I believe the one that fits in the spare tire spot was from an Isuzu Trooper.
