just hit 103,000 miles and time for a set of brakes. Should I go to a dealer or will any reputable shop get the job done for less? How much should I expect to pay?

Dealer. Other places will get the job done for less but the quality of there pads aren't as good. You'll most likely have more brake dust and the pads wont last as long.

+1. Shops like Les Schwab and Tires Plus will also try to sell you new calipers, wheel cylinders, and other shit you probably don't need. Some dealers will too, so make sure when they try to up sell you something, you actually need it. If they say your caliper is bad, make them show you.

Not a hard job to do yourself if you really want to make sure it's done right. You can use far better parts for less money too.

    Just changed mine last month.

It cost me $59.00+tax at the dealer, "part# 04465-04070 pad kit front disk" and get some brake lube for the shims at any auto store, took me whole 15 min to do both sides in my garage with basic tools.
There's a DIY running around in the forums if you're not familiar with changing pads.

I choose OEM because it was cheap, worked great and my wheels never got black soot from the factory pads.

    Good luck

For comparison, my girlfriends 2005 Hyunday Santa Fe needed pads and OEM were $130.00+tax for parts alone, ended up buying top pads at Advance Auto for $53.00 and hope they don't soot the wheels.

Good luck with that, when I had my 4Runner I did the same thing. Not only did I have a ton of brake dust but they were always squeaking. Hopefully yours dont do the same!

If it's just the fronts, those are very easy to do yourself. Quite often it's cheaper to just buy new rotors and install yourself than to pay to resurface old ones if you need new rotors as well.

If it's just brake pads that's a 15 minute job.

Yikes, the dealer wants $269 to replace front pads and resurface rotors. Seems like a lot.

Well, "according to the salesman" these won't squeak or soot the wheel, the ones that cost like $25.00 do, that's what he said, I guess that in a couple of months I'll know for sure.:D

Aftermarket are fine, but you get what you pay for. I've seen cheap rotors warp and get rusted. Stick with a name brand like Raybestos, Wagner, Powerslot, etc.
