Okay, it was always my understanding that is would be my only oil change by them. I just did not want to deal with the 45lbs needed to dislodge the oil filter the first time.

So, I went and got my free oil change. Gotta love when the techs take all the short cuts and leave your engine compartment a mess! 30 sec's and the mess could have been avoided.

Really? a couple of oil drops below the filter needing to be wiped off, is your reason for anger? Granted, they could of wiped it off, but it's not like your whole engine compartment was coated in oil.

A few drops of oil on the crossmember is not going to hurt anything.

besides, this was a free oil change, you didn't even have to pay for it. I think I would save the anger for when a place really messes up.

Wow, shoddy work right there. The first thing I'd be doing was complaining and showing it to them. Whether I went back or not would depend on their response (do they care, what's their true reaction, etc). I'd certainly take it to the service manager and complain. We bought our highlander used and it had their so-called 100-point (or 1 billion-point, whatever it is) inspection performed when it was certified. But when I pulled out the cabin filter, it was black. I checked the paperwork from the inspection and sure enough it was down as looking good with the tech's signature. Let me tell you, the service manager was PISSED when we showed him the paperwork and the filter! They replaced it while we stood there and then threw in free service on top of that. So I will say that while everyone just assumes everyone at the service departments don't care, it's not always so. And complaining of things like this is good for them because what if they weren't aware that it was happening?

But when that oil flies around and gets all over the belt and it starts squealing, not a problem? There's a reason things should be done right (the first time).

I get more oil than that on my scion when I do the work myself. Then I use it as as excuse to detail the engine compartment...

It doesn't look like the dumped massive amounts all over the place or anything...Get some degreaser or some simple green and wipe everything down (like the whole engine everything). You'll be good to go.

I understand it could be worse and by "free" means it's built into the cost of the vehicle.

My main point is if a service tech took pride in their work, would they return something like this to a customer? Sadly, I am thinking that customers have begun to accept this type of work.

I'm not trying to be a d**k to anyone, not the service manager or the guy that took the car. I'm pretty sure they do not look at the work that is being done - but it reflects back on them at the end of the day.

Free or not it reflects on the quality of work the dealer is performing. It would have taken the tech an extra minute to clean up the area. Makes you wonder what other steps the tech is skipping if he's rushing the job or simply being lazy.

Free for you and likely for the tech. What I mean is that techs are often forced to do those for free as well. They may not make a dime while they are working on that vehicle. Wonder why they get an attitude? Not an excuse, just a sad reality.

Same goes for all those cheap oil change deals. Techs do them for little to no money and are told to look the vehicle over for other work to sell. They try hard to find something so they can eat. Then we wonder why this hostile relationship develops.

Pay honestly for what a good job is worth and you tend to get good work without anyone trying to sell you things you do not need. Funny how that works.

Waste of a post.......you weren't willing to do the job yourself and then whine because someone else didn't do it to your exacting standards. Its just a little engine oil......

Hey man don't listen to them. I need to check mine, I want everything perfect on my truck. Im sure benca1 will chime in, he is so picky he stands over them and watches them change the oil. LOL. He is real picky!

See...If you are that picky- Do it yourself. You can't say "I don't have the time" if you stand there and watch them. You get better quality product for less money and you know it's done to your standards.

I do all my own work- so I've never had an issue with the quality...

    Well - for the record
I plan on doing the oil changes myself in the future, just like all my previous cars. As far as time, I think I can beat their 1 1/2 hour for an oil change - I'm pretty sure I can add a car wash with it as well.

Yeah- I saw that you had a reason for taking it it. A breaker bar and a good strap wrench (which can usually be borrowed from an autozone or bought for like 15 bucks) will make that a non-issue.
Having to fight it one time- Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. But I've fought with things much larger (like axels, springs, and engines) a filter doesn't seem too daunting to me.
