w3schools.com < best place to learn any type of web based coding IMO. been using it for years.

Are you only looking for coding and structure or the actual design as well? I could point you in the direction of some great tutorial sites too for design.

You're diving into something pretty complex. I've been in the industry for awhile now and there is a huge difference between Web Design and Web Production/ Develppment.

If you want to be the guy deciding how the a site looks then you need look for some design resources and learn how to use Photoshop and/or Fireworks.

If you want to be the guy who codes everything and makes it work technically, then w3shools is a great place to start. This book is what really got me started though:

    From a Hobbyist standpoint...

First, you need to get yourself familiar with the whole hosting/FTP jargon that's involved. The whole uploading/downloading of files, etc.

Then - you need some hosting space and a really good program for web design.

It's complicated shit. But, after you get your basics of how the whole thing works in terms of uploading, file structure, naming, etc etc. You can easily whip up a basic web page.

I've purchased books and self help discs & shit and for the most part - they were a waste of money. There's TONS & TONS of information & self help stuff online for free.

Create a basic page and just start playing with it and experimenting with it as you go. It can get frustrating..... If you're a fast learner, take some college classes or local classes (if you can afford to).

Learning the code first will make you a much better designer. It allows you to know what is capable, but getting into the industry now is a great time with the coming of HTML5 and CSS3.

I have been doing design/dev for about 10 years, and I still don't know everything.

    I just started learning.

I used Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML. (www.headfirstlabs.com) to learn HTML, On Amazon new for about $25. I'm also using The Idiots guide to Dreamweaver.

In my short expierence, a lot of it is just trial and error. Get a program and just mess around, there is lots of great reference material on the web.

DON'T use Dreamweaver if you want to learn how to code!!! It writes horrible code. Get yourself a good text editor and start from scratch. Work with Firefox along with Firebug and the web developer toolbar. Dissect websites you really like and figure out how they were built.

Im also interested in this. It's always good to learn a new skill. w3schools.com would be the best place to start? Interested in the coding first. Im pretty good with photoshop, so once i understand how it all works, i can create anything in photoshop and fit it onto a page correct?

Learn basic HTML, then add CSS, then add some Javascript, and finally start work with PHP.

Best way to learn is by downloading complete websites you like and tweaking them enough to understand how they operate.

As Picasso said, "Good artists copy, great artists steal."
