I recently had my head gasket and head replaced due to an overheat a long time ago, and today my truck started to get hot just 2 days after the job was done. I saw my temp gauge move up and down a little at first, then after sitting in traffic for a little, the gauge stayed up almost in the red. When i got home and shut the truck down before it got into the red, my overflow was boiling. So i figured that it may possibly by a thermostat. I changed that and it seemed to be working fine so far, but I talked to the guy who did my head gasket job and he said that if when the motor is hot and running, you shouldn't be able to stop the fan blade. Stupid i know, what can I say, most mechanics would do the same, but given that I stopped the fan blade with my hand while the truck is running hot, and then spinning with little resistance when shut off and still hot, does this mean a fan clutch change??

Sounds like a weak fan clutch. That's some amazing advice though. Sounds like a good way to tell someone how to get their fingers torn up. I've also had heating problems with a car due to a clogged up radiator that wasn't passing water through a large chunk of it. Not sure what the previous owner was putting in it to get it that clogged up though.

I'm not trying to thread jack here but did not want to start a new topic about a similar discussion.

Where is everyones temp guage sitting at? Mine looks like the following and sometimes creeps just a slight bit higher but never into the red. Its pretty consistent and does not bounce around.

My 4Runner that had the same design guages always had me in the lower 1/3. I am just wondering if this is normal. Thanks!

That could be my gauge. Pretty much stays right there most of the time. The only exception is when I'm on the trail, in 4lo, going up hill for an extended stretch of time. In those situations the gauge will go up a small amount.

my gauge always heats up to that exact point, the other weekend i towed a trailer up 6000 feet to go camping, total weight of the trailer and extra cargo was around 3000 pounds, temp gauge never moved even when i was climbing hard, good taco :)

    Sounds like fan clutch.

Also, if you get a scangauge, you can monitor the temp exactly. Mine stays beteween 191 and 195.
