DIY: Painting Engine Cover

Items Needed:

-10mm Socket Wrench
-Water & Towel
-Masking Tape (1" Width or Less)
-Plastic Bonding Spray Paint
-Clear Coat (Optional but recommended for durability)
-Your Favorite Cold Beverage

1. Remove 2 bolts on the front of the engine cover with 10mm socket wrench.



2. Rinse off engine cover and dry thoroughly (Use dish soap to get off any stubborn dirt).



3. Tape off areas where no paint is desired.



4. Paint cover (2-3 coats or until complete coverage) and allow appropriate drying time (15-30 minutes).





5. Apply clear coat (2-3 Coats) and allow 24-48 hours to cure (the can says 15 minutes, but it is not dry by then and will leave finger prints).





6. Remove Tape.



7. Install engine cover and snug two front bolts with 10mm socket wrench.



8. Finish off your favorite cold beverage and admire your work.

No noticeable gains in power/torque, but the increase in the range of the pussymagnet is astonishing.

 

What, I find that hard to believe! With a Tacoma, the "pussy-magnet" comes as a standard option in all Tacoma's.

 

Increase in range my friend, increase in range.

Sucks em in from a 10+ mile radius instead of the 5 miles max with a stock engine cover!

 

Thanks for posting this. I had seen it in other colors, but I was wondering what the cover would look like with the white paint. Think I'll be doing this soon.

No problem. I've seen a few white ones but they have painted the whole cover and not made it two tone.

Yeah I was thinking about doing it the way you have it because I don't feel like trying to mask off or repaint the letters.

I'm going to give the letters a go when I get some time. I didn't have thin enough masking tape to try it unfortunately. I'll update this thread when I do.

Power washer man. They work wonders!

The paint I used is a plastic bonding paint and the can said primer was not needed. I am very happy with the results and think primer is an unneccessary step (probably wouldn't hurt though).

Nice work friend. I just sold my '06 Taco and she was silver. I never got around to doing too much to her but I still love that color.

There will be pics All my mods end up in my gallery. I'm thinking of getting new spray cans though. I have rustoleum professional and white primer, but with 90% humidity and 100F degree temperatures it takes hours to dry (no joke). It's hard to keep things dust and particle free for that long too.

The time I'll save is worth more than the $8 it'll cost me.
