265's vs 245's on a 4 banger, need advice.

New tires this week. I have a 2008 2.7 4x4 and was looking for advice choosing between 245-75-16 and 265-75-16's on stock rims. I think I'll go with Firestone Destination A/T. I drive 90% city/highway, snow in winter and off-road for hunting and fishing, sometimes in pretty tough country.

-What mpg difference can be expected going to a 265?
-Low end torque, how much is it affected by a larger tire?
-towing? (I don't do much)

I have the stock Dunlops now, 245/75/16

I have 265's Bridgestone Dueler A\T. Noticed alittle difference in loss of low end power, not much though. Looks alot better, and I dont do much towing.

 

I think the tire is only about 1/2" bigger in radius (1" in diameter) so it's not that big (certainly not as bad as going to a 285). That affects the ratios a little - about 3%.

I just put 275/75-16's on my V6...it put the speedo dead-nuts accurate but the odometer is now under-reporting miles traveled by about 3%. That means, doing MPG calcs, you HAVE to adjust odometer miles to get good numbers. My guess is most reports of the WORST gas mileage are because they don't make that adjustment (the others include putting load-range E tires on that are really heavy.) The ACTUAL affect for me was 1.5 mpg on two tanks, but we also went into A/C season. Hard to make an accurate comparison.

How's the 3% affect torque? by that I imagine you mean 0-60 times? Probably need good back to back time slips to tell 'cause my butt dyno sure couldn't!.

I don't know why it should affect trailer towing..will be interesting to hear what the trailering crowd thinks.

 

I just put Dura Trac 265-75-16 on my 2010 2.7L - it will eat up a little power but the look is worth it.

Does that come in a 265/70? Would be almost the same height with more width.

 

Im going with 275-70-R17 BF Goodrich A/Ts I have fj rims on my yota with a set of bilstein 5100s i should be able to fit them on right? I think its only like a 32.6 inch tire.

 

I have 265 bfg mud mk2's on my truck. Also have a a arb and winch. Stock was 24 mpg and now is 20 mpg it sucks, but man does it look cool. It will go like stink in the mud too.

I pulled the trigger today on the 245's. I do a lot of in-town driving and from what I see in forums and on the internet, the larger diameter tire will in fact decrease mpg a little.

Tire weight is probably more important here for next round. Some tires can weigh 40lbs and be 245 and 265 can be 36lbs. All depends on the load capacity. I went with the 265 generals and no decreases for me in the city. For me it looks better on this truck at 265/70 and almost same profile as stock 245/75(little wider). 265/75 is another story as the tire calculator shows.

Also a larger diameter tire makes it longer for tire to count 1 revolution. So in fact a larger tire ever so slightly decreases your mileage counter, which can affect your mpg count --- again very very slightly. There is a point where larger tire passes a point it makes the engine work harder so it's not really a factor it seems.

I'm in the same boat as you. I am looking to beef up my tires a bit. I have the same vehicle but its a 2010. I'm trying to figure out if i'll lose or benefit from switching to the 265-75 16's.

From what I'm hearing there is not a big difference at all in overall vehicle performance.

 

I'm happy now with the 245's. The Firestone Destination looks to be a good tire, it's as quiet as my old Dunlops, mileage is the same as well as off the line power. I figure Toyota probably does a little research and has a reason for sizing tires the way they do.

 

First tank - I lost 1-2 MPG.

 

If you don't mind the noise they are great.

 

Wider tires will have more drag, so unless you get some with less aggressive tread than the dunflops (is there one?) it'll decrease mileage a little. That being said, I've barely noticed anything on mine (I have 17" sport take offs on it)
