Just a word of advice......I was a manager for many years when I was young. One thing I learned is don't be too friendly with the employees. It just doesn't work out. No matter how "cool" with the employees you try to be.......it will ALWAYS bite you right in the ass. I speak from experience. I never got fired when I was a boss...... but got my ass reamed a couple of times for stuff like you are talking about.

Good luck with the outcome.....and no matter what the outcome is........take it as a lesson and LEARN from it either way!!!!

I'd swallow a lot of pride and write a VERY apologetic letter to your manager and cc the HR person. Mention that you now understand that the incident was unprofessional and that you are very sorry about it. Ask to be given another chance.

Admitting guilt and accepting responsibility should demonstrate integrity and might even allow to to get your job back.

While you need to know as a manager, that this was a bad idea... I have to say that I have NO like for HR people.... people all in all need to grow a thicker skin and stop being so fucking afraid of saying the wrong thing. At work, the bigger the corporation, the more everybody has to walk on eggshells.

Did I say that I haven't? I have been fired from one job. I was very new to driving trucks and damaged a truck while still on probation. I simply went and got another job.

This is so, so true. I manage a network engineering team at Verizon... holy crap, the amount of HR namby pamby we have to wade through makes me want to choke sometimes. But it's a job, a good one, and I'll just pull my waders up a bit higher.

Sorry to hear about that. Wait and see what happens. You were honest about it which is a feather in your cap. True that about proper managerial behavior. Remember that at work, no one is your friend. CYA at all times!!!!!

No you didn't but would somone giving advice such as you did have helped at that exact time in your life? I bet not because you knew like he does that you screwed up. Or did they need to tell you that wrecking their truck was not a good thing? I bet you understood that, as he does about his mistake. If he is indeed fired then I am sure he will get another job, but at this time he is waiting for their final decision while he is suspended from his job.

Oh and I do agree with you about how it should have been handled. Just that we don't need to kick him while he is down. I'm sure he is kicking himself.
