I think Kinetik puts it best here- also may be a good idea to let the newer SCAR and ACRs models circulate for a year or two so the manufacturers can work out any bugs. Better their expense than yours.

I'm an AR newb so excuse my ignorance but, how are barrel heat build up and carbon fouling not an issue for those who put lotsa rounds through their non-piston M4s?

Most civilians don't run their ARs hard enough for it to make a major difference.
I have to say though that cleaning my M6A2 after a day at the range is like 30 seconds of work so that's nice.:)

I enjoy cleaning my 6920. It works fine enough for me, and its not worth paying twice as much for the SCAR & ACR

The irony here is that the majority of those buying these rifles are sticking them in the safe and firing at best a few hundred rounds from the bench per year.

My team went through a school presented by GTI, and in one morning (2.5 hour range session) we each fired in the neighborhood of 1,000 rounds! (There were approx 30 of us in that group...The concrete range looked like a street in Liberia with 30K pieces brass laying everywhere!) We really ran those rifles and had no problems with heat up or malfunctions. Start with a clean rife, and clean it after your range session and no problems!

    ...but not an overlubed rifle!

as to the argument, owning piston guns and GI guns, well, yes, there is less crap in the chamber/bolt/carrier, but even with a GI gun, a quick wipe with a rag cleans out most material.

A couple fo classes I have been through, we fired 500-1000 rounds in a day! Properly maintained rifles had no issues.

All that said, if you can afford what you want, buy it! The argument gets almost silly after a while, it's your money, spend it on what you want, not what an internet commando says is best. You can pick out the voices of experience in debates, and take hints from those.

For a first "assault type" rifle, and if initial cost is a concern, pick up a basic rifle and then spend some money on a training seminar, if it's a defensive gun. Hell, if it's not, a good training class will help you know your rifle and enjoy shooting it, even if it is just a plinking rifle.

    Enjoy, black rifles are fun!

    LoL

God Bless the internet commandos...- they can tell us the best gun, the best ammo, the best accessories, how to shoot it, how to clean it - they even know how often we actually shoot them

At the end of the day its your descision, I've found that I am really getting into shooting small bore (.22) and havent touched my AR or my M1A in about a month. THe best advice I can offer is to get a basic AR, play around with the options available, (grips, stocks, optics...) and see what works for you and your budget. You can always upgrade, its tough to buy the "end all, be all" platform and find it doesnt work for you. Most importantly, TRAIN for what you are planning to use it for. Attend a practical shooting class, I recommend looking at the "art of the tactical carbine" series produced by MagPul. There is invaluable insight on here. Do what you think is best.
    Cheers.

Since you started a new thread, I'll jack this one. Just got back from the range, put another 100 rounds through my ACR, 3/4" at 25 with my M68 Aimpoint. (wouldve been tighter if I had a gun vise) the thing handles like a dream, very ergonomical and friendly. .55gr, and .77gr run through it just fine. I am one happy dude. I'm still not saying that this is the end all be all rifle, but damnit, with the 6.8mm conversions coming, this will do what I want it to do very nicely.
