Built a second swing out for my rear bumper over the weekend. This has been in the plans for a long time but haven't had the time to do it until now.

    goals:

needed better place to carry extra fuel/water without taking up bed space or carrying the weight up high on the roof or rack.

better location for license plate so it didn't get covered up by my Trasharoo when I use that.

Additional aux light tied into reverse lights.

For the latch setup I needed to get a little creative. I had a second latch I could have used but it was pretty cramped for space and would have been a pain to make it fit cleanly with two separate latches. So I added a bit of 3/16th plate to the new swing out that is cut to clear the latch hook on the bumper and to go behind the other swingout arm. That way I could use a single latch. The new swingout is held closed by the original tire swing out and latch. Happy with the results.

Looks good, I like how you tied it into the latch system for the other side.

I gotta so about your latch then I had mine set up at an angle like yours but it ended up bending the freaking ubolt. How has yours not bent??

I had to go back and look at your thread to see if there was any difference. My latch is a little different design than yours. Yours is meant to pull in a straight line. Mine is meant to pull at 90*. Mine isn't at 90* but the angle has worked fine.

More importantly your latches were very small (especially your first one), but even your current one at 700lbs is small in comparison. Mine is a 2000lb latch.

    Really!! Wow..maybe I should just get a new one. I just didn't want a 6" long latch.

    Does yours lock in place??

How well did those Thule load bars hold up up there? I have the same snugtop and I plan to mount a Yakima basket using load bars to get the basket close to the truck. If it sits to high I'll eventually get them welded, but for now I would rather just do what you did.

They work great. For what you described they would work just fine if you did what I did. I definitely wouldn't bother welding in load bars unless you're unhappy with the height.
