I picked up this 2003 DC in Feb of 2010. Wanted one for a long time and wanted to get back into a 'minitruck' since I'd had a couple older Toyotas in the past. I've mainly been a Land Cruiser guy but I had an '85 and a '93 SAS pickup too and I loved both of those trucks but needed more seating so the DC Tacoma seemed like a great option.

    Current setup - July 2015

Next up was the suspension. I had OME suspension for a while on my old FJ40 andit worked well until I needed something bigger. Also have OME suspension on my 80 Series Land Cruiser so I had a good idea what to expect. I looked at ICON, Allpro, SAW and other coilovers but in talking with Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters who happens to be local it sounded like as great as the coilovers may be, they just don't hold up well through Utah winters and the road salt corrodes the bodies quickly, and they need to be rebuilt almost every year. I wanted less hassle so I went ahead with a full OME setup. I went with 882 coils up front since I'll eventually get bumpers and a winch. Used the OME Dakar springs in the rear. Along with new ubolts, OME Nitrocharger Sport shocks, exhaust drop bracket, greasable shackles. I also added a 10mm trim packer from a Jeep JK up front. It fits perfectly and gave me just a bit more room up front.

Old stock suspension with rear blocks was tired and needed to come out.

New stance. Looked pretty good and the ride felt pretty stiff initially on the road but man what a difference in the dirt. The suspension has since broken in nicely and rides great.

I know its effectiveness is debated heavily, but I went ahead and got a diff drop kit from cornfed suspensions. Seems to have helped.

Next up. Wheels. I didn't mind the style of the Ultra Motorsport wheels that were on the truck but the previous owner had taken it to a carwash and the attendant had sprayed the wheels with some type of cleaner that ruined the finish. Feeling like I might go with different wheels eventually anyway, I decided to just paint them rather than have them blasted and powdercoated. I cleaned them up, a few coats of primer, a few coats of Gloss Black Rustoleum, and several coats of Rustoluem Clearcoat.

I wanted to improve my bed storage a bit and I had plans for a roof top tent in the future so I got started building a bed rack that I had been designing in my mind for a while.

    _MG_7163_0ab9659fae394be4d2fc8642df674e986817b857.jpg

    _MG_7165_03e78bad1e7084e6eece8b8fa4b85233abb95832.jpg

The narrow slots on either side of the rack are for an adjustable tie-down track that I have. I used a bike bracket to hold the shovel on the driver side, and cut off the old bolts from when I added my diff-drop and welded them to the passenger side legs to hold my hi-lift.

    bedrack4_c83178ba1f78cddc547f7f4f319026c077923976.jpg

I wanted a work lamp of some kind back there and found one and a local warehouse. And also wanted to carry my snowboards in the winter when a tent wasn't mounted. So I got the light wired up and the board racks installed along with a few other tiedowns welded in place. Followed it up with a couple coats of paint.

    bedrack7_d7333c4b1ae9ea5502443328bf58590ab3ec8a81.jpg

About that same time I picked up a Safari Snorkel from Cruiser Outfitters.

Then I borrowed an old style Mombasa tent from a friend to try that out on the rack. The rack works great with the Mombasa, but will also work with Eezi-Awn, Camping Lab or ARB tents.

Have a good friend that does Home Theater stuff but spent several years doing automotive audio/video and he hooked me up with a new Alpine Deck for tunes that allows me to use my iPod. Also picked up a Uniden CB and external speaker and got those installed in the common ashtray location.
    CB_01_86355405d1ff2b6b2033d71aadcabc7c551d725f.jpg

I took it camping a couple times and found quickly that the Dakar springs are not very good at handling a load, and the truck was also sitting a little lower in the rear. So I got a pair of 1.5" shackles from All Pro and installed those. It leveled things out nicely but didn't take care of the load capacity. This is how the truck is sitting currently, but I plan to pick up a pair of OME AAL's soon to help with the load.
I still need to build a rear bumper, and figure out some kind of front bumper and winch and then I'll be right about where I want it. But it was good enough to get out and start using it more. I was part of an awesome trip over Labor Day that drove from the SE corner of Utah diagonally across the state to the NW corner almost entirely on dirt roads. It was an awesome group and an awesome trip. We covered nearly 1000 miles on dirt over 4 days and speeds as high as 90mph. The OME suspension worked geat on all the high speed stuff and handled the corrugated roads really well. I still need to get the AAL's but overall I have been really happy with the truck as this was its first real test for me. There is a full write-up on that trip over on Expedition Portal if you want to read it and see more pics. http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48929"]Utah Cruiser Expedition 2010[/URL]. Here are just a few pics of my truck from that trip.

Finally got some time to do a little more work on the truck. My wife was out of town for a few days this week so I was home playing "Mr. Mom" and I needed something to do while the kids were in school. So, I picked up some surplus steel and went to work. I had a scrap peice of 2" tubing left over from a mess up on a rollcage build, and a pretty rusty peice of 3x5 square tubing. I grabbed a receiver tube from Harbor Freight and went to work.

I've been meaning to do something about my rear bumper for a while. I wanted more protection than the stock bumper and needed a way to tow my little trailer. I looked at several of the available aftermarket ones but in the end I'm short on cash, but had some time and a welder. So about $80 later here's what I ended up with.

The bends that were already in the round tube worked out perfectly. Just had to cut them to fit. I need to get a little more tubing so I can tie the slider portion back into the frame. Otherwise it's ready to go.

Made a little bracket to fit into the receiver for the license plate. I might look for one of those little flip-up brackets for it, but this will work for now.

I like that it looks like it "goes" with the sliders.
