The Frankenstein Build! LT/Expo/Trail rig..and BS

Well the lights are only 18w..so I'd guess there was only 3-4amps. Was a 20a I think..or 25 fuse. Melted the wires tho and melted switch. Shit got real pretty quick.

I didn't take pics of that. Was too mad haha

I do have TONs of pics on the mirrors though and one with the light on...well the driver side on.

 

Post up your wiring diagram. Make sure you didn't wire it wrong if the diagram checks out. If all of that is okay, make sure none of the wires got stripped during the install somewhere.

I'm pretty sure this isn't it as you've done plenty of wiring already, but make sure all your components can handle the amps through them.

If all that checks out, maybe you had a weird surge

 

Yea it's so basic I can't figure out how it went bad

I wasn't using a relay though as they are LED bars so figured the draw was low enough.

No..I will use a relay next time.

Just saw your post, my guess is you might have accidentally grounded a power wire or a power wire got stripped and grounded when you turned it on. I would also use a lower Amp fuse if you only have 2 18W lights wired to it. If it is too high then stuff like this can happen before the fuse can blow.

Yea it's just 2 6" blitz pro light bars. Nothing drastic.

May e like an 8amp?? Or 5?

 

(18W x 2 Lights) / (12 V) = 3 Amps

Using the 80% rule the fuse and all the components should handle 3.75 Amps, so your minimum should be 4 Amps. 5 Amps will be okay, I would be okay even with using 7.5 Amp if I was doing the install.

20A or 25A you might as well not even have a fuse

Haha thanks man. I think I have some 5s so ill wire that up when I redo it. I have to tear open my doors again to make sure it's not all fucked up in there.

Really hope the lights are okay..or that's 100+ bucks down the drain

There seems to be some doubt at the moment.

 

No problem, I'm not sure with the physics behind it, but based on my very limited knowledge of physics, most of the power should have turned into that heat because of a power directly to ground so your lights should be okay.

Again, I'm not sure... I'd have to research the physics but generally it takes the path of least resistance.

 

Well a smaller fuse and relay are getting put in tomorrow. Or started anyways. Not sure how much time ill have through out the week..

 

Here's hoping man! I didn't notice them on during the whole fiasco..

 

I feel your pain... Time is always against me... But I just want to stress, check all the connections before just throwing on the new fuse and relay. With what happened today I'm willing to bet that you will just blow the fuse if you don't resolve what ever the issue was.

 

No worries. I take my time..hence why this is so odd. Been working on the wiring since like 2..
