Monte, what fluid do you use in your manual tranny? Mine has been getting a bit notchy and I was gonna change the fluid before it gets cold.

Brain fart on the auto tranny vs manual.

No im gonna say that you'd be at 3k at 75. Or just under 3k. not 2800.

Where is Ben..im sure he could math geek it up in here and tell us based off the 2500 at 70 @m3bassman

I have never changed it myself honestly. I got a full fluid change done at 109k miles when i did the timing belt and water pump. I had the dealer do it as i was in HS still and it was my DD. After i got the $760 bill i said FUCK that and have never let a shop touch it other that alignments. haha

    Sorry

Id assume its just toyota OEM though..

No problem, I guess anything I put in will be better than the stuff that's in there. I have no maintenance records from the PO so as far as I know the stuff in there came with it off the assembly line. Maybe I'll try some Amsoil GL-4 75-90

i think it has to be GL 5...

yea i mean..technically..Frank only has 127k on the OD...which is way wrong because of over geared drive line..so probably more lik 123k...haha

The manual states GL-4 or GL-5 for the transmission, kinda makes you wonder if it really matters whether it is one or the other. I guess I always just assumed Frank has a bunch of miles, I'm at 193,000 now.

Wow, 96k that's not much at all. Mine was already well past your current mileage when I got it. I guess I'll bother Ben about tranny fluid tomorrow cough @m3bassman cough

I run Redline MT-90 in my transmission as do a lot of other people on here. Some people claims in makes for noticeable improvements in shifting. The only difference I noticed from the cheap, basic gear oil I took out, is that it is much easier to get into 1st gear at very low temperatures. Been as cold as -30 and it shifts right in smoothly. Used to have to fight to get it to go into gear when it was really cold.

I heave read to stay away from any GL-5 in our transmission though as it doesn't get along well with brass syncros. Don't know anything else about this, where I heard it, or if it's true, but it might be worth looking into avoiding.

Wait. We were talking 70, not 75. Why the switch? When I said 2800 rpms it was at 70 mph with 5.29s.

This is what I have read and heard also. In my first Tacoma, a 5 speed, I used Redline MTL because it was GL-4. I think it was only 75w80 tho. This was years ago. Now, people are using the Redline MT90 which I think is 75w90, also a GL-4.

Wish i would have had my UG set up for trans temps during the trip. Im sure there were a few times it was probably running hot but it never had any shifting issues the entire time. I will probably upgrade the stock cooler too like this one you posted at some point. Towing definitely can cause some issues frm what ive experienced.

Idk. But we never go 70 anyways and and im at 3500+ for 75 which i know. Autos are about 500 rpms less, so thats why i went there. I don't remember what i was at 70. just over 3k i think.

Thanks everyone, looks like GL-4 Redline MTL is the way to go! @Speedytech7

I gotta save my pennies and focus on getting the Tacoma done, duh.

But since we're on the topic... dude down the street from me has a set of solid axles out of an '81 he wants $275 for. 4.11 gears with a lock rite in the rear. My truck has 3.90s stock... buy?

Idk. Haha up to you and what your doing with it.

If it's really gonna stay a dd. Then keep it on 31s and leave the axles alone.
