    History

Belle is my second 1st Gen Taco (and third Toyota), overall.

My very first Toyota was a 1st Gen
Taco - a 2003 Lunar Mist Metallic V6 TRD SR5 Xtra Cab 4WD 5-Speed (from 2002-2007). The only photo in existence below:

    tacoma02_zps397a1cba_ec020eaaabbff3df74e67ae7c6cdd38513d8bb74.jpg

Nearly identical, minus the color-keyed package. That Taco served me well for 5 yrs and sparked my love affair for 4-wheel drive. Every vehicle since then has been 4WD.

After a few years, I was considering a Jeep Wrangler 4x4 instead, for more serious off-roading endeavors. Until I happened to catch the Toyota FJ Cruiser (production-version) debut at the NAI Auto Show on TV. It was love at first sight. Screw the Jeep. So in 11/2007, I eagerly traded the Taco in for a 2007 FJ Cruiser 4WD A/T.

As much as I love my FJ, I missed my old Tacoma (and manual transmission)! After the latest round of FJ mods, I realized she was no longer a suitable daily driver. Since I now I needed a second vehicle, why not another Taco?

With this in mind, I set out to find another 1st gen V6 SR5 Xtra Cab or DC in 4WD. After a 4 month search, I finally found her last week (2/02/13). I really wanted a DC this time around, but an Xtra Cab will do. Beggars can't be choosers...

Belle - before her extreme makeover.

102,7XX miles from one previous owner. Engine runs great, smooth idle. Clutch is good. Nothing broken, no electrical or mechanical issues. Everything works as it should. The obvious blemishes were a missing TRD Off-Road Decal on the driver side and a small crack in the driver seat side panel (where the recliner lever is). No biggies.

Otherwise, in super clean condition for an 11+ yr old truck. No accidents, no rust. No stains, rips, tears, or cig burns to the upholstery. And, a clean title.

Also, completely stock. No upgrades or mods, except for a Rugged bed liner. The liner looks pretty new, no weathering and zero scratches/gouges. I doubt I'll keep it though. I don't think it will work with a bed rack I plan to get eventually. Update - sold locally on craigslist.

Tires are Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S 265/75/16s. These and the wheels definitely have to go, along with the suspension. Update - sold locally on craigslist.

Like with all my vehicles, I swapped out the factory intake with a CAI.

I had narrowed my choices to - AFE, AEM, and K&N. No personal preference here. AFE does make the TRD CAI for Toyota, but they're basically all the same IMO. I ultimately went with the AFE based on price - $226 shipped (after $20 rebate).

A dry filter was also preferred, for easier maintenance (especially here, where it gets dusty out on the trails).

    IMG_5922_zpsf4fd7060_4f99ea0091331102edb882cb48c6fd2331caf8a7.jpg

    * Minor issue with product - it was missing all the hardware needed for install. Fortunately, AFE is local (20 min drive), so I drove over there to pick up the missing hardware. Not only did I get my hardware, AFE was nice enough to give me a t-shirt for my troubles.

    * Minor issue with install - one screw was completely stripped on the MAF Sensor (preventing removal from factory intake), which took some time to extract. Other than that, install was easy as cake.

    Update:

K&N DryCharger filter wrap added to the AFE filter.

Goes well with the TRD billet oil cap.

Compared to my old Hondas, I've always disliked the long shift throws on my old Tacoma. Fortunately, URD had a sale on their Short Shifter Kits...

Install was simple, no issues. IMO, well worth it. Throws are much shorter and crisper.

Since the entire center console (front & rear) was removed for the short shifter install, I thought I'd try a little swap.

Belle's shifter boots looked a bit ratty, so I found a new Hilux shifter console with boots online. The grays don't match, but I like the switch cut-out in the rear. Currently, it is filled in with an old FJ Cruiser blank switch I had. Reserved for OEM rocker switch (for future rear lights).

Another thing I like is these boots look like leather, not like the cheesy original vinyl boots.

Physically, it's not a perfect fit with the center console, but it's close enough.

    IMG_5928_zps921d064f_e29a861233595a7c6485f8d22ae54a33ec002a21.jpg

What I hate on my cars are plastic/vinyl steering wheels and shift knobs. They just feel terrible in my hands when driving.

    The remedy:

    1. TRD Leather Shift Knob

    2. Wheelskins Perforated Leather Steering Wheel Wrap (Dark Gray). Since I wanted to match shift knob, I had to special order red thread (came with gray thread). Meanwhile, I'm driving with the unstitched wrap around the wheel to work the leather in.

    IMG_5929_zps80e513e3_c7e47cba115b66ac51a679213fa817a5dd33fbc4.jpg

Since the T/C Shifter Knob looked a little grungy, I painted it with Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric Paint (Dark Gray).

    IMG_5930_zps002453c9_40f92f9c2335612fbed46ee6b4f4551d7cb9e7a6.jpg

While I was at it, I did the floor trim on both sides too. I think they'd look better in black, along with the T/C shift knob.

    IMG_5924_zps7e947642_bc281a2894713685493f9c30b365bc1934eedc3a.jpg

    IMG_5925_zpsae0b3c3d_db6634f70f892e9f0880478271993e0776071be6.jpg

The rest of the interior plastic looks great, except the center console bothers me a little. Eventually I'll paint that (black) too.

The original cup holder tabs needed replacing, so I swapped them out with new OEM ones. They appear to be of a different type of rubber than the old ones. Hopefully, these will last longer.

    IMG_5927_zpsaa4f7732_4f796bfe633439eaa0f59afbe781b0730f53e6ce.jpg

Once everything was re-installed, I wiped down the entire interior (where applicable) with Aerospace 303 Protectant, as well as all black rubber & plastic interior/exterior trim and seals.

Since Belle was missing a TRD decal on the driver side, I found a pair of silver/red ones online. I decided on this color combo to be a little more subtle (vs. black/red).

These decals are an exact match to the original, except for one thing - they are die-cut vinyl.

For now, only the driver side is installed. The original black/red TRD decal remains on the passenger side.

    IMG_5931_zps80f51e2b_da68b5a1ed452d078bf455431d9834d4d72bcc67.jpg

Eventually, I'll do the passenger side to match. The console swap and everything else was enough for me today.

After years of driving with an UltraGauge OBDII Scanner in my FJ, I find it hard to live without one now. It's affordable enough, so I got one for Belle.

    Mounted with 3M Dual Lock.

    IMG_5934_zpsf1cbd8ae_a7995b6fcf6e9ccbfa310e6cf2f4e06dc6ffd7f4.jpg

I uninstalled the lower drive dash piece so I could route the cable cleanly through the dash. I'll eventually add some zip tie anchors to the dash to clean it up.

    IMG_5936_zpsf6b081bd_fc13117d4c61c522c18c50566287a773c5ee27dc.jpg

Belle's pedals were dressed up with JDM Razo RP123 Pedals.

IMO, factory rearview mirrors are too small for comfort. So, as I do with all my cars, I added a JDM Broadway 240mm Convex Rearview Mirror. I can now see out the entire back window and then some.

    IMG_5946_zps77dafdac_814a0ad5934e3d38d7349267cf668de5a1d9018c.jpg

I also swapped out the dome light bulb with a JDM 12-LED bulb.

Nice Build. You don't find many first gen's in that good of shape. Did you have to solder resistors for the Dome light LED install? People say the 1st gens have flickering issues due to lack of resistance without the ignition key on.

Thanks, mudpuppet! Yours looks like my first one

I didn't add any resistors to the LED. It does flicker without the key on, but not a big deal to me. I rarely use the dome lights in my vehicles anyhow (switch is always OFF). The dome light is more for my passengers to use.

I usually use the map lights instead, which remain incandescent in the Taco.

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to following your build as you continue modifications. There is a thread on here somewhere with a cupholder modification using a plumbers gasket found at lowes for about $1.50. There is also a template you can print on your computer and cut the pieces out. It's worked great so far, however I couldn't find the gasket in Black only Maroon so I had to use a industrial sharpie.

Belle came with some cheesy floor mats, so I ordered a set of front and rear Husky Classic Floor Liners. Kinda pricey but I have a set in the FJ and they're great for protecting the floor and containing dirt/debris. 5+ years of use/abuse and still good as new. IMO, well worth the $.

Another must-have for me - AVS Vent Visors.

A few days after I brought Belle home, I gave her a good clay-barring and a coat of Mother's Brazilian Carnauba Cleaner Wax. Of course, it rained for a few days thereafter. The old wiper blades squeaked and streaked, so I swapped them out with PIAA Super Silicone Wiper Blades (17").

Swapped out the factory antenna with an AntennaX Shorty Antenna (13") that used to be on the FJ.

    Thanks, williamsdouglas73!

I got the LED from eBay. Oznium is a good reliable online source for LEDs, but eBay has better prices.

After much thought, I decided to pull the trigger on a set of Konig Countersteer (16x8) wheels in matte bronze.

Wheels won't be ready until mid-March, but I wanted to take advantage of FN Wheels pre-sale offer - $25 off + free black splined lug nuts. Plus, they're local (Corona), so I'll be saving another $75 on shipping.

I should hopefully have Belle's suspension done by the time they're ready for pick up.

    Thanks, 423 Taco!

Short shift install was a piece of cake. Anyone with some common sense and basic knowledge of hand tools can do it in ~ 45 mins.

(FYI, still on sale for $110 at URD)

Might have to look into that. I've never really put much thought into one but it would be really nice

Yep, definitely nice to have but not necessary.

I've had short shifters before ( in my Hondas), so there's no turning back for me now!
