Got around to filling the radiator. I checked for leaks and found a few pretty steady drips. One dripping off the alternator, another was coming from the plastic oil pump cover that is behind the crank pulley. The last and most stunning was coolant dripping from the bellhouse inspection cover.

After tearing the front of the engine down, I am pretty sure I have found the leak. I checked the water pump bolt, and I believe they where fine. Just be safe I got them as tight as I dared. I don't think the water pump to block gasket was leaking, but instead the gasket that is between the top of the water pump outlet and thermostat housing. Once I got it torn down I could see a trail leaking from that area.

The coolant was leaking from there, then splitting off. some went down the front of the engine and dripping off the alternator and oil pump cover and the rest was running down under the intake and into the valley between the left and right cylinder banks. There is drain hole in the back of the block any water that may collect under there and t drains right onto the bellhousing, then down and around to the inspection cover.

Front of the engine torn down.

A bad photo of the coolant sitting under the intake... The red spot is the coolant. Just below the red spot in the picture is the left side fuel rail. It my phone has trouble taking good pictures at night...

Behind this housing is the gasket that is leaking. I made sure the bolts where tight, but its still leaking. I am not sure what the problem is, but I will be removing the thermostat housing and replacing both gaskets.

On a side note, I picked up a few more items for my swap.

Heat shields, more wire, a spare fuse block to steal pins out of, and some other random items.

I found my problem.. Looks like I had forgot to put the gasket in.. I am not sure what happend or why I put it together without it... :homer:

Anyway, I have the gasket coming, it was $5 from Toyota and it should be here today or tomorrow. I took the time to flush all the coolant out from under the intake and then rinsed the coolant off the front of the engine.

I have a few parts in bound and they should be here starting today through saturday. Stay tuned.

You're 16? When I was 16 I had just got this truck. In 2004 with 24k on it... paint was SUPER white, and the underside looked brand new. Now the paint is just white, the under side is stained from mud and dirt and it has 145k on it... Those people that show up at my door at 3am better bring more than just one suitcase of cash. :)

The square hole. I am pretty sure there is an actual gasket that goes there.... Look here at this diagram from TRDparts4u... Part number 15... I asked my friend at Toyota to order the gasket that went there, he said it would be here tomorrow... I have plenty of FIPG left over...

Damn dude... Sorry to here that.

I would LOVE to Supercharge it, however, the UZ engine family has pretty weak rods that dont hold up well under boost. TRD found this out, and thats why they stopped producing the charger. The units that are out there are either used and abused, or they are missing parts, or the seller wants too much, or all of the above... plus, I am still running the stock 7.5" front diff/ CV axles... I cant imagine they are going to like all this new torque...

If I ever get to the point of wanting more hp, I would have to weigh the options of going to a VVT-I 4.7. If I did that I would probably get a stronger set of rods for that engine, but thats a project for another day.

Side note, I dug out a tube of FIPG and sealed the thermostat housing up. I need another gallon of coolant, but so far no leaks... :)

Cool man glad you got it all figured out and back together... by no means am I a know it all, but I've done hundreds of tbelts/water pumps on these things and know for sure that FIG goes there. It's a safe gasket maker to use on anything oil or water related.
    Very sick build!

I think I have the wrong sending unit in the engine for the Tacoma cluster. I will try and find the right sending unit and go from there.

I AM SO FLIPPING HAPPY!!! I bought that engine Dec 26 2012... It been just under a year since I started gathering parts...that's 11 months of tuff times, and empty pockets.... It still needs work, but damn it.... it runs....
