Stock bumper was about 10 pounds, not too much there.

Next I installed the Bushwacker flares.
I decided to paint them, Krylon infusion satin and a couple coats of clear. they came out more glossy then I wanted but I figured they'll scratch up pretty quick at which point I'll most likely bed line them.

The only fitment issues I had was one bolt hole did not line up on the passenger rear. This quarter panel has a slight parking lot dent so that may have been the reason why. The rest lined up fairly well, I had to push hard to get them to line up so the screws would go in. They are much tougher then they appear out of the box, I thought for sure I was gonna break them pushing them on. We'll see how they do over time.

Sorry I missed this question. gas mileage listed to date has been without the bumper.

Last week or two during the deep freeze temps I averaged about 15 mpg but it was idleing a lot, about half hour in the mornings to warm up cause I'm a wussy. It did have the bumper on during this time and with the snow and new tires I wasn't exactly being easy on the skinny pedal.

After the newness wears off I'll post again what mpg is when driven normally.

I can't speak for the newer models, but my stock bumper is about ten pounds.
The skidplate mount is just stamped sheetmetal, and it weigh's less then a value meal. I removed the bumper before hand, Scotty and his guys gave me all the parts they removed, skid mount, assorted bolts and factory tow hook. There is nothing else.
I have both here, I'll take a pic on a scale. At most I'll give it 20 pounds, but no where near 40.

The newer models may be heavier, there is a difference in frame horn length and the extra weight may be in the bumper mounting because of this.

They sagged about an inch Ride's fine though, nice and smooth.

I just received 883's last night and I'll have my mechanic press the coils on Monday and I'll see how that does

MPG update.
The following is with the bumper and winch installed.

during the deep freeze that most of us got to enjoy I averaged about 15 mpg. Truck idled a lot during that time to stay warm and I was pretty heavy on the gas pedal as the truck is like a new toy now. Pretty much all driving was around town that week

During this last week I ran to the top of Cameron Pass twice, once with hubs locked and once unlocked. Outside temps in the 40's

Locked hubs mpg was 20.7 mpg
Unlocked was 21.2 mpg

Average posted speed is around 45 on that road and around 140 miles total round trip.

I'll post up again when I get some actual interstate driving down.

Hey Brett,

Nice truck. You'll find that the 883s will be a better fit than the 881s and you'll regain some of your lost lift due to the 881 sagging under the extra weight.

With the winch solenoid, I currently have mine under the hood, top passenger area (where the ABS would be on the newer first gens). What I found was that the resistance was too much and I was actually melting my power lead lug on the winch motor. I'm using 1 gauge wire, but only steel lugs instead of copper. I changed the power lug from steel to copper as a make shift band aide fix until this spring.

What I've decided to do is to have my friend make up a custom battery tray with a provision that allows me to mount my solenoid box on the batter tray itself. I'll be mounted at a 90 degree angle to the battery, so it'll be mounted in the empty space void in front of our coolant overflow tank, but attached to the battery tray.

This will allow for shorter cable runs to the winch and make for much shorter cable runs to the battery. I've already got the battery tray fabricated up, but to do this right, I too have to remove my bumper, etc, so spring time it is!

I won't be installing this until the spring due to weather, but something to think about if you're still pondering relocating the solenoid somewhere under the hood.

Very cool, thanks for the info on the springs. I get to stare at them all weekend in anticipation

I'm surprised 1ga wasn't enough, the cable that came with my winch was barely 3ga, on the small side, cheap Chinese cable.
But yeah, a couple feet will make a huge difference in current draw/drop.
Welding cable helps too with the finer strand count.

21.2 on the scale. I did not include the bolts and tow hook, they may actually take it up to 25-28lbs. So a little closer to 40 then I thought, but this is what my old bumper and skid mount/crush weighs.

That's what I was thinking too, must be longer, heavier brackets used due to the shortened front frame that gives the extra weight. Or maybe just a heavier bumper overall. Either way even at 40lbs the things are not much protection in a collision.

I can't wait to see pictures of your truck on 883s. I keep going back and forth between what I want to get 881 or 883. I'm just worried 883 will be taller than I want with just the addicted plate bumper and a metalmiller skid.

The anticipation is killing me too.
I wonder if I will need the 1/2" top spacer with the 883's, or no spacer or maybe a thinner spacer...
Right off I plan on throwing the 883's and the top spacer back in to see how it sits. I'll adjust from there.

In this pic, I have shoved a couple blocks of hard rubber between the coils, a big no-no, but I wanted to see what a small preload would do to the height. They give it back about a 1/2"
I also have about 250lbs of weight in the back to pull it down so it looked "normal" again. Actually looks pretty good and i keep second guessing myself on the need for 883's...



But I know when the rubber blocks are removed the front end drops another 1/2" and overall I lost about an inch with the bumper/winch combo. When the weight is removed from the rear it comes up close to an inch, so I'm left with a pretty nasty rake. Unfortunately I have no pics of that, but I can supply pics of my redneck coil spacers if needed.

In preparation for changing of the coils, I removed the 881's and shocks and put the stock stuff back just for the night cause I don't have jackstands tall enough to reach.
thought you might like the pics.

Before, jack in place but not lifting anything. 23 1/2" hub to fender with rubber blocks between the coils to help out.

I'll post up tomorrow if I get the 883's back on before I lose daylight.

These are the rubber blocks I had inserted between coils. Some leftover stuff from work, they are about 5/8" thick and are extremely hard so they don't compress and gave a slight lift on their own.
