Disclaimer: nothing in this build thread should ever be copied. I am just a goofball with a welder, but like anything in life, build your own skills, do your own research and ask experts questions especially when you start cutting axles, putting in suspension components, messing with brakes and cutting chunks of your frame out. Again do not copy anything in this build thread, this is for entertainment. Also this truck is built for a very specific use case, so if you want to give advice like "oh slander just tube bed it, 4 link it, put quadruple bypass shocks and an LS in it" just save yourself and don't even bother typing that out because the answer is "NO". Saying that ask any questions.

This build thread is a lot of tongue in cheek type messing around, I dont take myself seriously and it's almost a parody in some places. Saying that if you have any serious questions, ask away!! I have been building this truck for 17yrs now!

    Full internal cage (gone)
    No trailer
and a bunch of other crap i can think of.

Purpose of the truck is to drive me to and from the trail in relative comfort and be as reliable as possible. It's a bunch of nice parts wrapped in a crappy, rusty, dented up package! I have been building this truck for 15yrs now and it's a form follows function type of build which is a departure from most TW builds LOL!! The other purpose is to do usual truck stuff, hence the full length bed.

Here is the closest pic i have of it stock in 2005, I slapped the all pro bumpers f/r and the winch off my old jeep! I bought the truck as a DD while i built the jeep, i had no intention of wheeling it. Took it offroad once, and sold the jeep 2 weeks later!

old jeep that i sold that has funded 80% of my initial buildup:

Wheeled it stockish for a while and needed new tires so i lifted it.

    After:

I put OME 882s with rear 8 leaf deavers, 1inch lift shackle, a ubolt flip, and bfg 255/85/16 kms. I had the soft OME shocks out back, but i broke them off the mount at take over, and i decided to replace them with some bilstein 5100's. I have been very pleased with this combo and have no complaints.

Well i decided that i needed a crawl box after stalling my truck and rolling backwards down a 50 foot hill my clutch hated me as well! I bought some marlin adapters used, a toy case, and some 4.7 gears and built my crawler. I could not be happier with this setup!! The truck will go up anything i point it at and is reliable as hell!

Heres some pics of my latest mod. Its a lefty with a crawler bolted to it! The crawler has the stock 2.28:1 gears in it, 23 spline, mated with an MC07 XD to the lefty. The lefty has 23spline, 4.7:1 gears, the Advanced adapters low range housing, and marlin 30spline main shaft. I will also be installing RAD designs triple sticks, because i want my cup holders back. I will most likely be making a custom center console as well. Didn't get any pics of the install since it was spread over 4weeks (don't ask parts problems and it sucks living here!) and my camera was in mexico on a family trip. I also slapped a marlin clutch in as well.

Got the lefty and duals in, wired up the ADD to a switch (that's the red switch you see in the pic) and got the triple sticks in. I need to figure out a way to get the left stick to clear the gear shifter when the case in lo and the tranny is in 2nd or 4th. This is the RAD design triple stick kit, this is mated to a lefty so don't pm me asking how i got it to fit on a chain drive taco kit it may or may not fit i don't know!!

And look no more tcase hanging down, the lefty is pretty much tucked up to the frame rails, it hangs down maybe a half inch below them. It wasn't worth my time to clock it, it already barely fits under the truck.

I replaced my clapped out rear suspension, my 6 year old 8 leaf deavers finally gave up on life. The truck sagged 2.5"s more on the drivers side than the passenger side, and the springs were badly wrapped from years of wheeling with no bumpstops and a crawler with no traction bar. I picked up a set of all pro expo leafs for a smokin deal on TTORA. The expo leafs would be WAY too stiff for my application, so i pulled 2 leafs out of the springs packs. I also ordered a new set of u bolts, and spring plates from ruff stuff. On with the pics:
Side by side comparison of the deavers and the expo leafs:
    springs_4835b4a9a9fc518c5b344238040eca256f7cbf9a.jpg
    Side shot after the install:
    side_c75bb74c692a5ac5a7eeb47035a8f6789412916d.jpg
Shot of the springs, not a fan of the shackle angle but it should sag down.
    undersidedrivers_38aa4a28e4a546f2954c502a9d95c2efe3f32236.jpg
It still leans about an inch more on the drivers side. May be that i tweaked the frame flopping it in Harlan to that side 2 years ago.

The springs flex okay, a bit stiff, but they should break in after a few trips. It is nice not bottoming out on whoops in the road, and offroad i can get on the gas a bit and hit some good size holes, and the rear does not hit the bumps even with the bed loaded. I also have cut the axle wrap by 95% on the street, the yokes are no longer slapping into each other on the rear drive shaft.

Mounted up my bilstein 12" short body 7100 shocks and shock mounts through the bed last night. We cut a f250 shock mount in half and welded that to the rear frame after cutting holes in the bed. I also welded a new passenger side shock mount on the axle, moving it to the back of the axle. We failed to take into account the shock angle, so the bushings are bound up pretty good, but i am going to get some heims and that should fix it, it just sucks because the ones that came with the shocks got buggered up when i was pounding them out. I mounted the resi's to my pro comp spare mount, nice and subtle!!

I trimmed the bed sides down, and the next mods are an exo cage, and an SAS swap with either an FJ60 axle or a dana 60.

Looks good, keep it up, I hope to start mine soon if I ever get enough money between brake downs to rebuild my engine.

I built a new bumper since i high clearenced my bedsides. I used the all pro bumper as the "base". Its not pretty but hey it will work. I need to add some angled square tube behind the tailight and it will be done. It was 330am on Friday when i finished this so i decided this will be for another day. Its made out of 2x2 .120wall tubeing.

I picked up an fj-80 axle for the rear, it will get stuffed with a lunchbox locker of some sort.

So let me start this by saying this project was begun when i was trying to get my stock parking brake to work and do a brake job on my taco rear. Endless hours of swearing at drum brakes coupled with toyotas awesome rear axle seal design of dumping gear oil in the drums led to my quest to ditch the rear drums. I looked at disc brake kits and after ordering one from a vendor, and eventually cancelling my order (STILL waiting for my money back, ill post up who it was after it all blows over) and realizing that the kits are all way over priced and I'm not comfortable making my own homebrew disc brake setup. SO after some searching i came up the fj80 rear axle and luckily found one at a local junkyard. I paid 350 for this beauty, its open and out of a 1996 FZJ80.
    IMG_20140805_172602_385_zpsf342d898_e8b7233621f5be0baa97d55e7c6ad64974c14588.jpg

    This is one heavy bitch!!!

Those of you that dont know the fzj80 has a Full Floating rear axle with factory discs, a parking brake that will work with the tacos and has a monster 9.5" ring gear!! I went with the open model because...... Its all i could find!
The plans are, hack the brackets off stuff it with a spartan locker and run it for now back and forth to starbucks (the 80s natural stomping ground, i want it to feel like its at home under the taco). Eventually it will get a detroit once i need to re gear.

So far the tear down has been going good, the seals were shot so there was gear lube in the hubs but the bearings look great so im going to run them. Also one of the set screws for the hub nut was stripped out so i had to drill it out. The cone washers on the hub popped right out.
    The ring gear looks great:

Beef!! The splines look great, barely any wear and no twist.

Well heres how it sits after 10hrs of cutting and grinding. The brackets are thick and it sucks using cut off discs and a sawzall. I also ground off the diff plug to avoid that problem before it begins.

My trans decided it didnt like its fluid any more and dumped it into the crawler and tcase. I thought the crawler was leaking, turns out it was venting off the trans fluid. One day it went POW letting the clutch out at a stoplight, and after that would always pop out of first. Talked to the guys at marlin and was going to rebuild the trans myself, but they convinced me to just get a rebuilt unit. So last weekend i spent 16hrs in a 15* garage swapping the trans.
    Tower of gear reduction:

No way to do this without the trans jack, well no easy way that is!

Got bored this weekend and brought the fj80 axle third in the house to thaw out to install this:
    IMG_20150211_173014_382_zps737f4326_069ab74bd19b6f1284a19a191da4f2d42bcddb00.jpg
    Sweet box for sure!!
The install of the spartan locker takes less than 10mins, this thing is stupid easy to install and looks beefy as hell!
    IMG_20150221_122605_441_zpseb03b201_d9e8015904cc50aab760549914e081f62719c31b.jpg

Now all i need to do is install my prop valve and burn the axle in. I need it to thaw out a bit first...

Sweet rig. I'm surprised you're still on 255s.

Thanks man, its definitely not a looker but it goes where ever i point it. It's a combo of $$$, reliability, its a DD (its in its twilight years of that though..), and I like the challenge of the smaller tires. My ifs is starting to wear out, the tires are wearing out and i really want a front locker, so an SAS is in the future. I have to go pay for and pick the axle up one of these days.

Yea it looks like it does a good job of going where you want it to go. This will be sweet if you sas it. How big of tires you think you'd run?

I know what you mean about liking the challenge of smaller tires. I was on 255s for a while, and I like the challenge of being a dclb lol

All my friends wheel with 37s so probibly those. It all depends on what kind of a deal I can find on tires.

I've been seeing a lot of people talk about 37" military take offs with plenty of tread for real cheap. Idk how or where people find them though.
