Some lift, some armor, some scratches..
Well, I finally decided to start a build thread for my baby, the "Rad Baron", a 2001 Toyota Tacoma v6 DC TRD.

    How it sits today: 4/11/15
    [IMG]

    Suspension/Drivetrain/Steering:
OME 883s,10mm spacer, Nitro charger sports, DS trim packer
    Wheelers 5-pack w/ Wheelers AAL, 10" 5125s, 1" Toytec shackle, 4 1/2" Daystar bump stops
CVJ Axles, high angle inner boots, outer boot-slide mod, 1" diff drop
    Stock 4:10 gears
    Moog ITRE/OTRE
    ES steering rack bushings
    All-Pro uniball UCAs

    Wheels n Tires:
    2nd Gen TRD OR w/ Warden 265/75/16
    1st Gen TRD Alloys (derp'd black) w/ BFG KM2 255/85/16
    1.25" Spidertrax

    Armor/Recovery:
    BAMF bolt-on Kick-out sliders
    BAMF LCA skids
    RAT IFS and Transmission skids
    Custom x-member and TC/Belly skid
    Sky Mnfg. E-locker guard
All Pro wrap-around rear bumper w/ custom hidden hitch
ARB front bumper (end cap mod and added x-member)
Superwinch ep9.0 w/ 3/8" synthetic rope and Daystar poly rollers
54" Reese farm jack, Lift mate, 3/4" D-rings, 3"x30' strap

    Interior:
Wet Okole in front, Cabelas waterproof cover in the back
    Blue LED instrument cluster
    LED interior lights
    Sirius Sportster 5
    UltraGuage
    Husky floor liners
    Cobra 75 wsxt, 4' firestik

    Misc.
Deck plate mod, aFe filter, ISR delete
    Grey wire mod
    Blue plug mod
    Sock monkey bedside decals
    Retro hood stripes
A.R.E. topper w/ Thule Tracker roof rack
Blue sea fuse block, 100a breaker
Rear diff breather, extended braided stainless brake lines F/R
    Aux back-up lights

I'm pretty stoked with how the truck looks and performs right now but have some big plans for waaay later down the road when it's not my DD... til then I'll continue to do the mods that I can and I'll update this build as they happen.

    Future mod list:
Box the rear frame, u-bolt flip and relocate shocks
Dual battery, HO alternator, and wiring upgrade
    Re-gear to 4.88s
    ARB front locker and OBA
Diff skid, plate the gas tank skid
Touch screen head unit w/ Nav and back-up camera
    Rock lights

My old '97 xtra cab was bought back from Toyota Corp. in July of 2011 (after only owning it 8 months) and I immediately began searching high and low for a replacement.

After about a month long search, and taking a look at a few duds along the way, I finally found what I was looking for, a DC v6 TRD.

The PO had taken really good care of this truck both inside and out, and despite having ~130k miles on it I felt it was a really solid deal @ $10,5; so I hopped on a train (With Toyota's check in hand!) and drove it home back to NJ..

First things I did was swap over some of the things that I took off my '97 like the deck plate mod, head unit, Sirius Radio (have since hard wired it), Magnaflow 18", and Thule Track roof rack for the cap.

Here was my first 'off-road' experience with the truck, cruising the beaches of Corolla, NC:

Next, I did a few cosmetic thing: sanded and painted the stock skids and center caps black, grill emblem Red, and got some clear corner lenses.

I got in on a Wet Okole GB and swapped my cluster lights to blue LEDs
    [IMG]

Knowing about the frame issues of course, I had my local dealer inspect and undercoat the frame juuust before winter set in.. GTG!

Bought an Ultraguage to keep a better eye on my MPGs and figured out a sweet spot to install it.

Once spring came around I did a thorough detail, and took off the factory running boards to make it look a little lifted haha
    [IMG]

By now.. the mod bug had hit and I decided to lift it.
Wheelers 5 pack, 1" Toytec shackle, greasable main eye, 5100s out back, Nitro Sports in the front, the 10mm lift enhancer, 1" Diff drop, and a set of used 881s that I scored in the B/S/T
    [IMG]

BOY did that lift her up! (Also got Sock'd around that time too..)

Naturally, it was time to flex it out
    [IMG]

After a lil mishap of mine.. the rear bumper had to go b/c it was preventing my tailgate from operating properly..

Decided it was time for new shoes and picked up a set of TW Wardens w/ the kedge grip on BFG casings in 265/75/16. I am very happy with that purchase! have recommended Treadwright to many many people.

Found a few more places to play and test out the truck.

Bought and mounted a 54" Hi lift in the bed --> http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1st-gen-tacomas/271614-diy-hi-lift-mount.html

Found a set of cheap 2nd gen OR alloys, bought some Spidertrax
    [IMG]

    Added some TW Horsepower!!!

Being a Tile contractor I often carry a lot of weight around and the ass end was getting a little saggy by now. Went with the Wheelers aal and extended brake line
    [IMG]

spending a bit more time off road, and really wanting to push the limits, I figured that some armor should be my next investment. Got in on a BAMF slider GB, wanted the bold ons b/c at the time I had no access to a welder, and went w/ the kick-outs b/c of shit like this..vv install thread here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1st-gen-tacomas/298121-bamf-bolt-slider-install.html

    prepped and painted
    [IMG]
and got them mounted... even my Wife likes them!!!

I have been absolutely thrilled with Jerry's product quality and design. They fit the truck perfectly, look baller, and have held up to a pretty good amount of abuse.

Moar armor was in store!!.. RAT skids (IFS & Tranny) and a Sky Mnfg. elocker skid
    [IMG]

Wife gave me a set of Redline hood struts for my Bday, these things rock!

Got a good deal on some BFG 255/85/16s and mounted them on my old wheels
    [IMG]

    did some trimming!

a bunch of TW guys were having a meet @ Rausch Creek and I figured why not get some LCA skids last minute before the trip.. Thanks Jerry for the quick shipping!
[IMG] they def did their job on Trail 13!!

Back in May I scored a used ARB bumper, Superwinch EP 9.0, and 883s that a local guy was selling off his rolled '01 xtra cab. got a super deal!! Took a couple months to 'refurbish' everything; sanded and painted the bumper, rebuilt the winch, found some super sweet clear lenses for the bumper, installed some Daystar poly rollers, had a dude do the end cap mod that I fabricated (more on that soon), remote mounted the solenoid, installed everything, and wired it all up to my liking!!

    heres how I got it..

    wired up
    [IMG]

    how it looks now!

The signal lights are for a 1981-89 VW Golf/Jetta Euro model SMALL bumper. they fit perfectly and also have 2 bulbs in them which I wired independently to serve as parking lights (168 clear) as well as blinkers (7507 amber) (also did the fog light fod waay back when) heres a link for anyone interested .. http://www.ebay.com/itm/400413005382?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648

    End cap mod:

Cut off stock end-caps and ground down to bare metal
    [IMG]

Fabricated a 1/4" angle iron to slide into the frame rail, as well as a piece of 2"x3" tube for a new crossmember.

Mig welded a bolt through the new end cap, and also drilled some rosettes in the interior of the frame and welded those for additional strength
    [IMG]

Then welded in the new crossmember
    [IMG]

    All painted up

Love it dude, you've clearly been busy too!

Got pics of the sections of the frame you boxed up?

Definitely put in some hours on the truck recently.. wife hates me!

I didn't really box the frame, just added some beef to the front end caps, as seen above, to hold up against heavy winching. The stock end caps were basically 1/8" sections and the nut on the inside was only tack welded, a known weak spot on 1st gens

I do want to box the rear frame eventually though

So did the tire pop off the bead or get sidewall sliced? I saw the one video and heard the big rush of air.

just popped off the bead, it was a combination of all the weight, having to turn driver at the bottom, and being aired down to 12 psi

pretty quick fix and we were back at it :)

thanks Andrew! the next meet can't come quick enough! I'd be down with exploring a new place or just going balls to the wall at RAusch !

I've never had a tire pop off the bead. When it does happen can you get air into it so it re-seats itself or do you have to throw on the spare and have a tire shop reset the tire on the wheel?

I was curious too if you used the heat method to reseat it on the trail or just threw on your spare

Threw on a spare, Greg was able to reseat it with his CO2 tank despite our encouragement to try it with fire lol.
