You've reach my little truck experiment. It's a long travel 1999 5 lug toyota tacoma that I've done pretty much all the work in my garage. I've learned how to build this truck by lurking build threads for years. It's not too pretty to look at and isn't a race truck by any means. Just a fun weekend desert truck that is pretty high maintenance.

This is the most current pic

Ran a roof mounted light bar up front for a few months. I reinforced under the mounts with plating. I didn't like it because it took about 3mpg away from city and hwy. Also my peripheral view was killed because it only shines forward. Plus huge glass reflection. It is going behind the cab when I want to take another attempt at it.

    Highlights from 2014 to now:

Up next is adding a turbo to give the 2rz the power it deserves. My daily is a mazdaspeed3 which is the reason why the truck hasn't seen any love. In the meantime I've learned how to understand the ways on tuning turbos. This truck is of course going to have some fun new challenges that the car didn't give me. What is new to me is piggyback controllers and I'm fabbing up the turbo from scratch because an off the shelf kit won't fit around the engine cage. The car was all bolt on part and I tuned through flashing my ecu. Toyota isn't too friendly to tuners so I'm going to see how well I can flirt with the stock ecu and piggyback.

Right now I got a pretty big turbo parts list already collected. Here is my box of turbo parts that I have been collecting next to my bed.

Today is the start of the build. High flow Walbro fuel pump went in so I can put in some fat injectors. I got this off a member on here. It is just a walbro 190. I figured I wouldn't max out a 190 with this build so it is buzzing away in the tank.

Here is the list of what I got:
    T3/T4 internal wastegate turbo
custom manifold that I'm going to hack up a bit.
    oil lines
    gauge pod
    MAPECU3
    Depo racing wideband o2
    boost gauge.
    parts to make a downpipe.
    bunch more miscellaneous parts

I'm still parting together a front mount intercooler. I'll do that once I mount the turbo. The turbo is going to be sitting slightly over the valve cover. Pictures with my destruction should happen in a few weeks.

The intent with this build is to be able to go completely back to my current setup in one weekend. Let see how well I'm going to stick to this plan. Right now I'm going to hook up to the EGR valve. I may cap it and throw a resistor. The MAPECU3 is going to be hooked up through a PNP harness from URD so I don't have to solder wires inside the cab and be able to stock out quickly. I'm also going to plumb up to the stock cat. I'm only going to run spring pressure for a while until I'm convinced I can add more. Hopefully plan to make 40-60hp over my current setup.

Got my hands on a Tundra axle over the weekend. She has 4.56's and factory lsd in her. Came with another drive shaft and e-brake lines. I'm going to see if the e-brakes will adapt to my style of brakes. I'm not digging the block of wood under the tires so I don't roll backwards trick which I'm currently doing. Still up in the air if I want to weld a truss on this axle. It is going to be nice getting some width in the rear and move up to a stronger axle. I'll need to find some glass bedsides and get rid of my bed first. This rear swap won't be until late summer. This and my Yota spindles will probably be slowly prepped in the back ground.

Build wise I only got my oil return line welded onto my oil pan. Next week I'm going to run the street class tuff trucks in San Diego so I need to get everything back together this weekend. Back to turbo work on the following week. Headers coming off the following weekend to mount up the turbo. When I get a wild hair up my ass I'll be wiring up my piggyback to my jumper harness. I'm not a fan of soldiering wires.

Here is my Tuff Trucks video of me in cab with the GoPro going through the course. It was a fun baseline before the turbo. I also capped off the EGR valve today and so far not throwing any codes. I'll give it a few more days to make sure I'm right. If it works out I'm going to wire my resistor into my jumper harness for my piggyback system.

Yeah that is why I still drive slow. Last owner did that so I'm slowly removing all the sketchy stuff. Cage should be going in this winter if everything keeps going to plan.
It is actually custom and welded to the frame. It does the job of crashing into hillsides and hook up points to pull me out when I get stuck and protection for the radiator. It isn't too pretty but is pretty strong.

Well finally officially kicked off the turbo build. It is a tight fit. I was only able to get the manifold tacked together. I can still run an internal wastegate, I can close the hood. I won't hit the engine cage. I might need to move the rear spark coil around. I'd like to have the turbo sit lower, but this will do until I redo the engine cage. Hopefully I can be running around by late july or mid august.

I recently welded up the headers and fabricated a downpipe to mate to the stock exhaust. The internal wastegate has a compression spring to help lower boost pressure to 5 or 6 psi. Stock is about 9 psi. All I did was thread the shaft further up and you have an adjustable mechanical boost control. The oil lines are all hooked up. I also have my boost gauge and wideband gauge routed in place. I need to mount it to the dash and clean up the wiring.

Next on the list is install my pink injectors and intercooler piping. It should be ready to fire up by then. Hopefully 3 weeks I should be street-able and another few weeks to make it off road worthy.

Sorry, really bad cell phone video, but it is alive. I got everything hooked up. I just need to spend time cleaning up stuff. I'll get some pictures and good videos in mid august. I need a blow off valve badly. It surges bad and it is pissing some oil out the front of the compressor. It might be junk ebay turbo ready to die on arrival. It does have a warranty. Now that I got it to work I might be doing a legit t3/t4 right around the corner.

Just been driving her around finding bugs to fix. I cool thing is driving around no one has any idea I have a turbo under the hood. The skid plate hides the intercooler pretty good. I added an air straightener inside the MAF sensor housing. She idles and revs very smooth. I turned the boost up to about 7 psi over the weekend. My afr's at WOT stay around the mid 11's. It is pretty fast now relative to how it was before. Butt dyno says I maybe gained 50hp. I added a blow off valve from ebay. It works really good and isn't annoying. Sounds like an air brake going off. I'm battling this oil pissing out of my turbo since the install. I think I solved the issue. I don't have the pcv going into the intake manifold anymore. I added a cheap crank breather filter over the valve cover. The turbo would pressurize the block too much causing the oil to not drain back into the oil pan. Too much pressure in the turbo bearing causes oil to leak past the seals. I only drove around the block and hoping this has stopped the oil leak out of the turbo issue.

Cool thing she is a beast on dirt. Turbo is pretty laggy on tight trails, but once I get the rpms above 3k the tires are going crazy. At least this setup seems like it can take the abuse to off road. Hopefully I can get the camera out an get some footage on the dirt.
