WTT my 7" 4.56 geared rear end for your 7" 3.? geared rear

im running 31's and do tons of highway driving now, and the gearing needs to change. interested in a lower gear ratio rear end. just swap em out. located in san diego.

1996 2wd non prerunner, 2.4

 

Wait you want a lower gear? That would actually be a numerically higher number. 3.xx would be a higher gear. Are you trying to go back to stock or get more torque?

Need a higher gear ratio. Not lower. I'm driving 95% freeway now and the 456's are killing me with my 2.4 and 31's.

 

I don't think it matters between prerunner and non prerunner. The leafspring saddle is reversible. If swapping whole rear ends and as long as its not a trd locking rear the gears would be the same size if just swapping gears

 

So you want higher as in anything higher than 4.56? Because what I learned when fixing my gear ratio problem was that a numerically higher was actually a lower ratio and vice versa. It sounds to me like you need numerically lower number like 4:10 or 4:30's I have 31's and put in 4:10's and my speedometer is correct now and my shift points in my auto tranny are all back to normal. Gas milage still blows though I get 15.5-16.5 mpg on average.

Are the gears in a rear and or are they out? I don't feel like tearing apart my rear diff to swap out gears.

 

the gears are in, all you need to do is pull the axles out and swap the 3rd member in and add gear oil.

 

Ya know, as simple as that is, I honestly just want to swap out rear ends. If I pull my 3rd member out I might as well install a limited slip diff.
