Loose E-Brake when Released

Hey,

I have a loose ebrake on my 2003 tacoma. When I release the brake and put it in; the brake light stays on. If I push it in and hold it the light goes off; but otherwise it wiggles back and the light goes on....

Any ideas what I could do / what I need to do to fix it?

I'm guessing the cables are rusted?? Not sure but that's where I'd start. Or maybe the spring that releases it. Mine gets stuck sometimes in the snow but it'll release once I've driven about a quarter mile.

 

First off...you need to inspect your rear brakes.
Check the condition of the shoes, and are they wearing evenly?
Check the condition of the ebrake mechanism inside the drum as well as all the cables that attach to the drum and run along your axle tube.

The cable could be 'stuck' due to rust & dirt.

If everything checks out OK....then you can adjust the cable tension.

However, just an FYI..... If you ever change your shoes (rear brakes), you will need to readjust this again with new shoes on.

 

I had the same problem and all I had to do was replace a spring the pulls the cable from the cab tight. The spring is under the cab by the way. Just follow the cable till you find the spring under the cab. The spring cost me around $8 at toyota.

 

my buddy and i both lifted ours and disconnected our ebrake, and our lights both come on nature of the beast

 

Same thing happened with mine. Simple fix!
