I talked to the Spring Shop around me and they informed they could not re-arch Toyota springs because they are metric steel. I posted pics of my weak spring in another thread I started.

I just did the axle wrap mod, and it got rid of almost all of the axle wrap. As far as the change in the way it rides; I cannot tell any difference; it rode rough before the mod and it still rides rough!

Still no part numbers for the u-bolt kit from Advance or Autozone? I see the number for the helper spring, but I'm just looking for the U-bolts.

I just picked up the parts from Pep Boys. The part number is 13-1501A. Also picked up a bag (5) of washers too. Don't know if you have a Pep Boys near you. Just trying to help out.

    So here's a dumb question.

When the truck is cold (regardless of air temp) and I'm starting in first gear from a dead stop (I have a 5MT transmission), the whole ass end of the truck starts skipping and hopping and jerking like it's have a seizure. After the truck warms up, it goes away completely. And sometimes I can finesse it enough when it's cold so that it doesn't freak out (wow, that last sentence has some harsh innuendos)

    Is this "axle wrap?"

That sounds like your rear end is possessed. Wife tells me that all the time.

Ill be honest guys, i bought the kit above (13-1401A - 2.5" bolts instead of 13-1501A 3" bolts) installed it about 4" from the axle and i still have a pretty noticable clunk..... it didnt really kill the clunk at all. Also, the pre-load on the spring pulled the ass end of my truck down noticably.... this was all after a full driveline greasing. Any thoughts?

move them closer to the axle plate. ..the clamp must capture all the leafs. mine sit about 1/4" from being butted right up against the axle plate.

I did this mod on 10-31-2010 and it completly fixed my drive shaft clunk. It has never happend again and it has been so long I have forgotten about it. This really works and really made a difference in the ride of my 2001 Taco. I was almost to the point of selling it until I did this. I really enjoy driving it now especially since its paid for!

I just looked at a previous post to get the date I completed the mod. Seriously, I have not given the axle wrap a second thought in a long time due to the mod taking care of the problem. Just like a sore throat...you don't appreciate or even pay attention to how many times you swallow during the day until you have a sore throat. Have a great day!

This thread restored my sanity. When my Tacoma was about 2 1/2 years old the axle wrap started. Unfortunately at that time I had no idea what it was. Neither did my local Toyota dealer. They ended up installing a new drive shaft, which of course didn't fix the problem. After finding this thread I went to Autozone, bought lift spring clamp kits, installed them, and said goodbye to axle wrap. I was thrilled! You guys are awesome! Thank you!

Now I have to let my Toyota dealer know I fixed the problem and demand new leaf springs. Honestly, I consider the clamps sort of a band-aid fix. Obviously Toyota was putting faulty leaf springs on some Tacomas. Anybody know if Toyota is acknowledging this problem? Are they doing anything about it?

Hey guys i don't know of this will help since I've never had an issue with axle wrap, but if u wanna check it out, cool. Dunno if you've ever heard of 'doug' springs or not, but its a great way to improve your rear suspension, and its potentially free, depending on how much you wanna hunt. But check out doug's (4WD) thread on leaf spring rebuilds or the link to my build thread. I don't explain it the best but you'll get the picture. And hey, I'm not thread jacking, just friendly input.
