Before I swap to synthetic, should I Seafoam?

I'm still a noob, but I wanted to get some of your thoughts about Seafoaming my Taco before swapping to synthetic oil. My truck has 83k on it, but after scouring TW, I am wondering if doing the seafoam before swapping to synthetic was a good idea. So before this becomes a pro/anti-seafoam thread,just interested in those with some more savvy than I before I do a rookie mistake.

I'd say no, JMHO. Switch to synthetic and go witn 5k mile intervals.

 

I have added seafoam to my gas as a preventative measure type of thing (once a year to help clean injectors etc), but I've never added it to my oil or in the vacuum lines. The vacuum line thing kinda scares me a bit dumping in so much at once, and I'm really unsure about adding it to the oil, causing it to thin out. Many others have done it though, so I guess it cant be completely devastating, but just not something I feel comfortable with doing on my engine.

I really dont think its necessary to do it before switching to synthetic though. Oils have detergents in them already, unless specified as non-detergent, so I'm not sure about the benefit of adding in even more cleaner unless its been neglected. I suppose if it hasn't been driven for a while or someone went too long between oil changes that it might help some, but I wouldn't worry about it if the trucks been maintained.

I just seafoamed my 04. Did 1/3 through the vacuum line, rest in the gas tank. Little nervous at first putting through the vacuum line... Good results though. Smoother shifting, smoother idling.

Why waste your money switching to synthetic motor oil? Dino will do just fine with these Toyota engines. They are not high stress engines.
When was the last time you had an engine failure because of oil? Never has happened to me in 55 years of use of dino oil. Follow the owner's manual for oil type and change interval and you engine will last for a long time.

 

I used Mobil 1 in my G35 coupe.. But I go 6,200 miles between oil changes. The manual said with highway driving and synthetic oil, to change at 6,200. So thats what I do.


As for your question... I see no point to add sea foam. If anything put a qt of ATf in with the oil and run it about 10 miles then change your oil. I have had a few ole timers tell me that one. I think Sea Foam is a good product, just not really needed for what your doing.

 

DONT DO IT!!!!! you millage is low....there fore you probably have 0 engine sludge. If you ask me i dont think anything should go in the crankcase but oil. I have used seafoam in the gas and intake with no noticable results.

 

But your also saying using Sea Foam has not caused you any problems...

Off subject... But all the car, bike, truck message forums i am on, and have been on... I have never seen one that mentions sea foam anywhere even close to as much as this forum... Is this place secretly sponsored by Sea Foam???

 

What the hell is the matter with you? Haven't you read all the synthtic oil threads???? You are supposed to drop a ton of extra dime on synthetic, then change it every 3,000!!! You need to search the 2nd gen threads! You do know how to search, don't you!?!?!?!?!?! DAY-um!

Seafoam, like all lube oil additives, is a waste of money. As a new disciple of bobistheoilguy.com I learned all lube oils, even 0W-20 grades do not provide adequate protection on cold start up. Conventional multi-grade oils such as 5W-30 are really a 5 grade oil with Viscosity Index Improvers (VII) to protect like a 30 grade at operating tempurature. Those VIIs do wear out over time so then you only have the protection of a 5 grade oil at operating tempureture. Synthetic multi-grade oils such as 5W-30 are 30 grade oils with VIIs to flow like a 5 grade at cold start up. Those VIIs also wear out over time so then you don't have the cold start up protection. 0 grade oils flow the best when cold but still not good enough. I worried my whole adult life about oil getting dirty when I should have been worring about start up wear. What to do?
Even thougt I have the maintenance package on my 2010 Tacoma (2.7 Four Banger) I am going to use 0W-20 every 5000 miles even if I have buy the oil myself. I'm also going to switch my 2000 Celica to 0W-30 conventional oil every 5000 miles.

 

Say what you want... I have used Lucas and it works. Had a Eclipse that had some lifters sticking. Used Lucas in with the oil and the engine sounded great, and to my knowledge the car is still running...

I used Lucas in the auto trans of my Camry. had 150k miles on it. I sold it to a guy that drives it about 80 miles a day to work and back. He has had it for about 3 years, and the tranny is still going strong. Here was the deal, against my better judgement I changed the tranny fluid at 150k, and guess what... tranny started slipping. So I pumped about a quart out, and added the Lucas...

Not all oil/lubricants are a joke...

 

seafoam is good stuff. Use it. It will clean out your intake. Also your injectors. I put half of bottle in my vaccum line the other half in the tank. Just follow the directions. Great product.
