K&N filter + dusty roads good or bad?

im basically looking for a second opinion other than my own. I'm getting ready to go hunting next week, and the mountains in california this time of year are really dusty. I have the K&N drop in filter with the deckplate mod. I know that it is a high flow filter, but would I be okay just screwing on the deckplate? or should i go down to autozone and pick up a stock air filter and use the deckplate with the stock filter

I think you'll be fine. Just clean it before you go, if you haven't for a while, and when you get back to get all the dust out. As long as you dont go crazy with the oil so all the dust sticks to it.

Pretty much every trail out here is very dusty, specially when following someone else. With my cold air/open style air filter, I haven't had any issues with it and dust. Just a little cleaning after for my own peace of mind, but it really didn't need it.

If it makes you feel better though, put in a cheap air filter, but I doubt its going to filter the air as well. Good enough for everyday driving, sure, but for driving through dust clouds... I dont know. The dust particles should be big enough that it shouldn't matter. If you're expecting the K&N to get clogged up and a cheap one not to, that means all that stuff that clogged up the K&N went through your engine with the cheap one.

I think I'd put the deckplate on in either situation though.

 

well ive done some research on TW and most poeple say to get a stock paper filter because they filter better, especially for dusty conditions, i use my K&N all the time but that is just everyday driving

 

generally stock filters actually do filter and flow better....atleast in the VW world they do

K&N filters are for show and sound for the most part

 

thats kind of what i was looking for, i think i will go with the stock filter just for mountain driving, i just dont like the idea of high flow filters in dirt.

 

Put the deckplate in and you'll be fine. Clean your K&N regularly.

I used to clean mine about twice a year.

 

I got a aem cone filter and I have driven behind a some socal TW buddies that have dust my whole truck and no problems

 

As long as the K&N air filter is cleaned and oiled you should be fine.
